I have a ARB deluxe bar on my Prado. It's dark grey in colour but I still get glare from it when the headlights are on.
I'm planning long drives so I wanted to reduce it as much as I could. The end result worked very well.
What to use?
1. Black tape...peels off when a high pressure hose is used or just from the heat here in Darwin.
2. If I use tape, to replace it and prep the surface for new tape could be time consuming.
After speaking to some people, they said use black paint.
Went to a paint store that ONLY sells paint. Showed them my bullbar and they said the following:
1. Use mat black paint in a spay can.
2. Mask off area where you want the paint. For a crisp edge, I believe there is a 3M tape made for spray painters...
Also extend paper halfway up bonnet.
3. Lightly sand back the surface with steel wool. I didn't have any so I used 240 grit sandpaper (worked nice).
4. Clean the surface. I used a light amount of turps (also recommended on the can) on a cloth and used a dry cloth to
wipe up any residual turps.
5. First coat was a light spray mist. Allow to dry for a few minutes.
6. Re-apply 2-3 coats, min dry time between each.
7. I allowed a couple of hrs to hardened (good thing about Darwin) before removing masking tape.
I was told by the paint shop that due to the UV, I would have to re-apply every 6 months or so if it started to fade being matt black. To do so just lightly use steel wool etc.
