  • Better than black wido hands down $250 tops

    guys,
I saw the post on the black widow draws and despite planning to patent my custom storage solution for the Prado, couldn't let you all go out and spend that much money and still sleep at night.

The concept is simple my prado is baby carrier at day and beach fishing / 4wd at night so it had to be a system that was quickly installed / uninstalled and had to be flexible in function.

Soultion - the existing hold down clips for the 3rd row of seats.

You can see in the pics two of the modular items I have made although I also have another for the right hand side for when the fridge is not needed. the concept basically uses some mild steel rod that clips into the 3rd row brackets, and is therefore installed with a push and removed with the flick of a single button. The fridge is slighlty more complex because it is heavy so it also has a couple of off the shelf stainless over centr cam locks that hold the base down to the seat lugs in the middle of the cargo area. I have always used plastic "nally" brand bins for my storage and I can fit 5 in the back here with the fridge and six without the fridge. they don't rattle or squeek because they are plastic they are completely waterproof with a lid on and they ARE indestructible. The system just lets them slide in an out easy one at a time. Anyhow I've attached a couple of pics for you to have a look at but if you got some scraps around the house you can knock up one of these babies in 1/2 a day no trouble. I have used my extensively for over 7 months and a mate at work made one and used it across the simpson last year - no worries mate!
i'd be happy to hear other ideas for modules for camping that you can just clip in and out and maybe leave at the tent giving you all that room in the car when you get there. Anyhow the floor is open lets hear what you all think.

PS I've got draws in the work cars and the folks have them and they are not flexible they take too long to get in and out and your modular options are basically limited to the time you order them.

I like the idea of using the seat anchor points to fit something that is easy to take out. That would be the best of both worlds.

I think the whole point of having the draws is the ease of getting to your stuff, just pull it out and there you go. No unpacking. I have a similar setup in a hilux made from marine ply. The draws slide on a wood base. Cost less than $300 bucks.

Not sure I would do it in the prado though, its a bit more flash than the old lux!

If you are happy with your system then thats all that matters!

        Interesting ideas!

I'm making a false floor at the moment. Making a frame out of 16mm (I think) steel and going to plonk a sheet of marine ply on top. Was going to use the cargo barrier mounting points to locate it but might have a think about using the 3rd row seat points. With paint to make the steel look good I'm at about $85. If I put some carpet on it that might blow the cost out a bit!

I too have been toying with how to secure drawers, and came up with an idea whereby a rail crosses the seat clamps in the floor, with the front end clipping in, and a thumbscrew arrangement securing the entire system from the rear of the cargo area....

Another alternative, of course, is to use turnbuckles on each side, and secure to the rear seat rails.

while talking drawer systems, I found the drafting diagram I downloaded from somewhere a while back, which is attached below:

If you'd like a full copy of the PDF, please PM me... :-)

Alternately, this system, which I found at ExploreOZ looks good too:

            good ideas

            Guys,
I like some of the ideas I've seen so far.

The idea of the bar that slides one end onder the seat lugs in the centre of the floor and the other is fixed with a thumbscrew would solve one of the problems with the overcentre cams and clearance. If you keep the cams in the horizontal plane then they actually want to pull the base sideways not down so I have been using two pulling in opposite directions. It works but it's not as snug as I'd like. I could use a bar pivoting under one and held tight to the other with a cam. The beauty of the cam is that they always just pop undone so the whole thing can be removed in less than one minute.

Draws are good but they are heavy and your options are limited. If you use this system to build storage modules out of ply and steel bar then you just have a few lying around the house that are custom made to suit whatever trip you are going on. I like this aspect because I use my vehicle for so many different purposes and the type and amount of gear I take is different depending on where and how far I'm going.

The mate at work painted his steel to make it look good but it still does the same job.

The idea of inserting a full base into the back of the car is great and it would be ideal to fix it to the seat brackets making it stong, secure and safe. The only problem with that is the full width of the cargo area is wider than the door so if you don't make it in two parts and fixe them together somehow then it is difficult to get it in and out.

I was hoping someone would have made some modular draw sets that sit upright and clip into the seat brackets.

It is a shame the black widow draws are so heavy and hard to get out, and that despite the modular concept are difficult and expensive to change the layout of once installed. The quality of the slides they use are great though.

the best cargo rack so far

              Hi all

For what its worth I have purchased a rack system which does what i need and is simple to fit.

Its a rack that clips in to the 3rd row fastening points, strong and sturdy.
              too easy, flexible.

I use a set of plastic drawers under neath which allows me to access food, drinks, recovery gear at any time without unpacking anything.
again easy to install and remove.

if anyone is interested I got it from
              www.lifestyleracks.com.au

hope it helps some with some peoples ideas.

              cheers

              John

Sorry about the link to the FISHSEQ site where I had the pics posted, the link no longer works. If you want some copies of the pics just email me or PM me with your email address and I will send them through.

I have recently stiffened my original design a but since with a lot of weight on the shelf beside the fridge it palces a large side load and the original ply deisgn didn't cope with this extremely well. I just needed to glua nd screw/nail rather than use no glue and I should have used a full piece on the rear of the fridge compartment for cross bracing.

                      All good.

                        John,
The Life style racks are simple & very clever in design.
Do you get much in the way of rattles & main question "What cost"?

                        Cheers,

It would be nice if they didn't have such a massive 45 deg cutout.

Also i am curious as to whether they would be strong enough to carry a fridge and slide on it.

Though they are well thought out and would suit the majority of people out there who want the functionality of a draw set up but still use the third row or need the cargo space.

                              Hi Fazza,

Not a problem with noise, no rattles no squeaks, dead quiet. the way i like it.

I load a 55L esky on it and no probs. The 45 deg cutouts help loading it in and out and also I suppose it allows access to the jack if needed when the rear is full. I use it to stand things upright like a water container fits nicely in the corner upright or a small gas bottle for a quick coffee when having a break.
As for the fridge I locate it in place of the middle row small seat, works perfectly.

                              cheers
