Looking at putting drawers in the back of my prado but not keen on spending thousands for black widow etc. Has anybody done a diy set? or know of somewhere I could get info to build my own.
Cheers
The real advantage of drawers over other modular storage systems is that you can get at stuff without taking all the other stuff off the top of it and...
you don't have to put all the stuff you don't have to take out on the floor or ground to get dirty or wet while getting at the stuff underneath.
I do a lot of boating and have a need for robust dry storage. I have been using Nally brand Nally bins for over 15 years now in a wide range of 4wd and boating environments and they are the ultimate storage solution. They have problems
they are not square i.e. they have tapered sides so the base is narrower than the top but
they stack (because of the above problem)
they are indestructible
they are completely waterproof (with the lid on)
they are lockable with one padlock
I can fit 5 full size bins in the back of my prado including an engel fridge on a slide with the shelf system in the above link that wengnuts posted. If you are not interested in the fridge just make the right side without a slide and put in another bin.
I saw some draws advertised the other day that are using a modular system of bins that advantage over the shelves being they let you access the rear bins withou lifting anything out but they are not the full width of the cargo area because they can only be as wide as the space between the arches and they use cheap crap bins.
I really question the value of drawers they are heavy hard to install and restricted in application and storage flexibility. The above side did get a hit from someone interested in fitting a slide base to his car and this would be an awesome addition to the shelves. Better than draws as it is independent to the shelf and basically works like draws but could exaclt match the floorplan of the rear cargo area.
I am dissappointed that the draw manufacturers are not making more use of the existing attachment points to make their product more versatile.

Have:Prado 120 2005, Bilstein Ridepro lift, front and rear air lockers, standard bull bar, 240mm plastics, batteries, fridges, slides, towballs, UHF, phone, wife, 3 kids.....and all the other crap that you seem to need to have a good time these days.
Have no more: landcruiser ute, swag, beer and spare time.
If your keen on a simple rack system just go to lifestyleracks.com.au and they make a real simple yet sturdy rack at a good price.
That then allows you to purchase what ever size draws or buckets for your needs.
It also then allows you to use the rack or remove it when you have extra kids or larger items.
Ed,
As jvprado suggested you may be interested in the lifestyle rack set up, I have one & have found it brillant.
You can even mount an outboard motor across the back with room for your fridge, obviously with plenty of anhcor strap attaching points.
07 Silver Ash, GXL, D4D, Auto. Lifestyle rear cargo rack. 2500 kg Tow bar with Tekonsha elec brake controller, Rear dust deflector, Mio Sat nav, (Still trying to fault the Dunlop AT20's)
I made rear storage drawers for my Hilux Surf from these instructions: http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/cargo_box.htm
When I changed my vehicle to a Prado 120, I just had to shorten the unit. Fitted like it was made for the Prado
