  • Stainless Steel Insect Screen

So i was a little bored today at work and came across some stainless steel mesh and thought i wonder what i could do with that.
 A new insect grill/mesh thingy!
So here are the pictures of before and after. Feel free to comment as i'm not really sure wether i like the look of it. I have some concerns on wether it will impede air flow more than existing toyota bug screen does, but when driving home from work the 50 odd km's this afternoon travelling at 100kph, there was no noticeable change in the water temp.

    Before

    After

    Cheers,
    Mick

    Re: Stainless Steel Insect Screen

    G'day Mick
I must say that I like what you have done with the grill man.
The perf. sheet may rub on the chrome plating of the grill, as does the Toyota version on ours.
I also added some alloy expanded metal sheet to the openings in the bull bar, ie. behind your number plate, also behind the Toyota symbol in the grill. Bloody locust and bees have hard heads and condensers are expensive believe me. We have had no increase in engine temp. even towing up to 44 deg. celsius.
    Cheers Troy

Thanks for the feedback Troy. I thought about doing behind the openings in the bullbar as well but it looked as though to make life easier i would have to remove the bar, and i didn't have that much motivation. Is that the case or how did you manage to secure the alloy to the openings.

        Re: Stainless Steel Insect Screen

I like it Mick. Nice bit of bling matches with the rest of the shiny bits on the front. Nice work!

On air-flow, I suspect a better gauge would be when you're stuck in traffic. Travelling at 100 km/h will be ramming air into the engine bay, so I would guess the impedance presented by the grill will be easily compensated for by the ramming effect. Though, on a hot-dusty trail, with the engine working hard and when the fan has to do most of the work; that's when I would be watching temp gauge.

        Great job mate!

          Re: Stainless Steel Insect Screen

Why not put the new mesh on the inside of the grille?

That way it still functions, but is out of sight, and doesn't rub against the chrome grille...

            Hi again Mick

I have noticed in your signature that your Prado is sporting a Warn. Ours is devoid of this therefore it was quite accessible.
i just folded the mesh and riveted to the cross section of the bullbar grill. check out my build up post.
I would try to add a link but fear of losing text prevents me ops: ops:

I've gone for the all black look as the GX comes with a black bumper and grill (also removed the badge).
