    Re: Welding to chassis

UMMMM Very interresting things might have changed since I worked on truck chassis and 4x4s fitting drill rigs and alike you needed a bodybuilding licence to do work on altering chassis and welding was very limited to cuts.As for using low hydrogen rods they might be a little bit hard to handle for the average DIYER.and not many would have access to a hot box or a H.F welder.TINKERA.

      Re: Welding to chassis

On Patrols we weld on 10mm plate drilled and tapped to accept the bolts, to the chassis, and we weld 2 x 1"long along the bottom, and same along the top, but stay away from vertical welds on the chassis, though I have seen some who do, and if you look at one of the highest stress points on your 120 chassis, right where it bends, curves from the horizontal up toward the engine, Toyota have done a full vertical weld to attach the body mount outrigger.

I wouldnt say welding to the chassis is a CANNOT DO, but a careful considered and well planned propostion, that can be done successfully.

Dont forget, the whole chassis is welded together from parts to begin with, using the above description, by the factory

        Re: Welding to chassis

Not a good idea to weld onto any chassis. Most are high tensile and heat treated. Welding will compromise the area around the weld (heat affected area) and will crack at that point. Always best to use bolts either through or around chassis. If going though use spacers inside to prevent deforming the rails.
