  • Engine swap

    Hi Members.

Dont hate me or think of me as an idiot but I was just wondering is it possible to replace my current 5vz engine with 1GD in my 120 series toyota prado 2005 model LWB.

My 5vz has clocked around 200,000kms and some 5vz experts telling my horrible stories of injectors leak and coils failure in this petrol engine as common faults.

So I am just wondering since the 5vz is in great condition at the moment why dont I replace it with 1GR or 1KD or 1GD.

The research I have done so far is for 1GR i need to change the geat as well but for 1KD I only need to replace engine and same gesr assembly will fit.

1GD being a more powerful and new technology is attracting me more than 1GR.

I have modified my 120 series prado with some after market suspension, diff lockers, and going for some extended fenders and 285/75/16 tyre size also. So no plans to sell it, rather I see it as a keep.

    Need your expert opinion/suggestions

    Thanks

All options sound messy to me, maybe consider selling and buying a more modern machine

Where did you hear about these issues with the 5VZ - mine has just clocked 383,000km so I'm curious if I can do anything to help it last longer.

Two of my friends owning 5vs engines had issues couple of yesrs back. Both frequent travellers, one drove his toyota surf (5vs engine) 800kms up north (seldom low 4 engaged as required) and upon arriving parked his vehicle over night and next day it wudnt start. They replace the ecu but same issues. Then a mechanic told them its the burnt coils. Cost him a fortune to source those coils and got the vehicle moving. Dont know the mileage.
second friend had issue with injectors on his 2006 prado once the engine clocked some 220,000 kms, replaced the injectors with OEM parts but then 15,000kms later same issues. So he replaced the whole setup with 1GR.
These things just made me afraid, i travel a lot and was just wondering if other regions have any similar complaints with 5vz and what was done. Thats only reason I was thinking to have a swap since the engine is all good at the moment.

Fair enough, I must admit mine hasn't been offroad much by me and I haven't engaged LL very much. We mainly use it for camping in fairly accessible places etc. I have only owned it for 5000km of that so who knows what's happened before

But if the 1Gx is a fairly easy swap and you have the cash better to do it before the original engine poops out then you can schedule easier and might be able to sell the old motor... most 5VZs around have 300,000km+ at this stage. Also you can get it done before you're next up for a timing belt.

That’s crazy talk. All of the diesels have issues, way more so than your existing V6.
Swapping out a 3.4 for a 4.0 would be a huge job, heaps of $$$ by the time you get it engineered etc.
If you’re dead set on a repower and have the cash, 1UZ or 3UZ.

Cant make up my mind yet thats why gathering more reviews and experiences if some have.
timing belt I have changed recently

i boight it when it was at 150,000kms and in Pakistan we can only import these so went down to dig out its complete record. Hostory says it is a japanese version, imported to Pakistan at 56,000kms and from 56k till 150k regularly maintained by toyota motors here in Pakistan and I personally took ALL the service records. Lubs and belts were replaced at scheduled maintenance intervals. So all these facts tell me to keep it and let run the same engine but then above mentioned 2 mishaps with 5vz makes me think to have a swap before its too late.

                Hi Carco

Never thought about 1 or 2 uzfe. Can it be done in 120 series prado?
why wud you vote for 1uzfe and not 1GR. Kindly shed some light.

A repower using a totally different engine is a huge job.
Typically nothing works, engine mounts etc are the easy bit.
Cooling system, intercooler, fuel system, instruments and to top it off, all the wiring.
The normal method is to source a complete donor car so wiring harnesses and so on can swap over.
If you google the Lexus GX470, that’s the US version of a Prado that came fitted with 2UZ.
