  • What is the best wasy to attach a carge basket

    I purchased a generic cargo basket that I would like to attach to my Thule cross bars, which sit on the OEM roof rails? What is the best way to secure the basket to the cross rails? Cheers.

    A u-bolt fitting kit usually available from your local roof rack supplier.

      I used the fitting kit that came with my basket (shown in the bottom right of amts link) for the heavy duty bars. I have seen people install these kits with the nuts at the top. I installed mine with the nuts at the bottom but I also chucked the supplied plastic finger moulded nuts and used nyloc nuts as I didn't want to be checking and tightening every time I stopped on our trip. Also with the brackets facing up IMO there is a huge risk of items rubbing against the excess thread and damaging your goods in the basket.

        I am with MDS69 with one addition: with the nuts facing down use Loc Tight AND tape the 2 nuts on each bracket together so they can't come undone on corrugations - survived 6000 km of dirt including CSR corrugations. Neil

          I intend to use the basket on long camping trip but take it off when I get home due to the height restrictions in parking lots and the noise factor, is there an easier on/off solution?

            Sadly I don't think so.
            I think there is a trade off to being secure for the type of tracks we encounter like 404pug mentioned to ease of installation/removal.

              The U clamps can be a bit fiddly especially if you put the nuts on the underneath. ( which is the only way to go IMHO )
              A good stepladder helps. I find it only takes 15 minutes to get the basket on/off
              BTW - there are different U clamps for the Aero bar and the HD crossbar - the Aero clamps are wider and flatter.
              Cheers, Wayne

                Note that the Thule crossbars may be narrower than a Rhino Aero or Sportz bar. You may find that the U-bolt clamps for the H/duty bars may fit more snuggly.

                Or buy a Thule U-bolt kit (MA 3035) --> http://www.thule.com.au/news_detail.php?news_id=1

                  I guess it it the U bolts that I am looking for, will have to research that and look at buying them from the US on my next trip over.
