  • Prado Mods...which order.

    Hey guys,

I currently have a 2000 TD auto prado, with a 2" king spring lift with bilstein, TJM aluminuim bullbar, dual battery, a fridgemate 55L fridge/freezer and 265/75r16 BFG MT. Which I'm currently looking at doing some more mods with a budget of $4000.

I will be using this car for mainly touring and fun on the weekends, and is only driven about 5000km/year, (that's without a major trip which I'm going to try and do every year.)

The things I really want are

    - Safari Snorkel ($450 I'll install it myself)

-Front and rear ARB lockers (I think about $2800 installed, I'll use my current compressor and buy a bunnings air tank), I'm the only person in the group of people that I go 4wdriving with that doesn't have lockers, and I'm the only one with IFS. Plus with lockers I will be able to take things slower and cause less damage to the 4wd.

-rear storage system. (build me own about $400)

    -rear awning ($400)

The things I think would be great to have

-a Detronic Chip ($1300) and 2 3/4" mandrel bent exhaust (not to sure on the price but I would think about $800-1200). I would get this mainly or better economy, I'm getting about 15L/100km around town and between 10-12L/100km on the highways, and about 23L/100km sand driving (REALLY soft).

-Total chaos upper control arms (about $800) like Taresks, and 80 series front shocks (OME $300ish) (for the rear of the prado). These will greatly increase articulation front and rear.

So what do you guys think I should get and in what order.

    Cheers,

    Andy

    Hi Andy_B

If you have the money to spend on off-road ability, lockers are always good.

I have been looking at the Total Chaos / All-Pro / Donahoe upper control arms with some interest but my biggest question is, how much extra travel will they yield?

I know that the ball joints on the factory arms will bind at some point, but I have yet to find out just how far they will go.

I plan… to pull the wheels off mine some time and have a good look at just how far the OEM gear will travel. Then undo the sway bar, drop out the top of the coil over and have a good look and poke to get an idea of how far the CV’s will go before they come close to exiting the Tri-pod joints etc.

I like the idea of more articulation, but replacing the upper arms brings rego and insurance issues…

I would be keen to find out just how far the OEM system will go and if it is limited by the ball joints or whatever shock is being run. If it is a case that the particular shock is limiting travel, then the shock could be spaced down from it’s upper mount and by using a shorter coil, the same ride height could be achieved with the addition of extra downward travel (making sure that everything is still OK on compression).

Mind you, with all of this being said, there are many posts regarding how hard the guys have had to work to get after market coils and shocks on and this leads me to believe that at full extension of some after market shocks, the OEM system is getting very close to it’s maximum happy limits.

So… after all that, you only have half an answer and a page full of my ramblings. :?

    Paul.

<EDIT> I have moved the rest of my post to http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?p=10218#10218 to stay closer to topic.

      Hummmmm

I didn't know the control arms can cause rego issues. I have already disconnected the sway bars, but I have extra have duty springs at the front..........A Front locker sounds alot easier.

            Hey Paul

Feel free to keep rambling. There are some of us who get ideas of what could be but have no practical experience of what is possible, what else is affected or where to start. Hearing about it from guys who've been there is a great help.

            Keep rambling.

            Cheers

              Andy B,

It appears you must have had a Range rover or Discovery, as I like your self, feel the need for better articulation from the suspension. Unfortunately disconnecting the sway bars would make the vehicle unroadworthy & obversely a insurance issue.
So as pcm 120 suggested diff lockers may be the way to go.

                Andy B,

If are planning to do major Trip this year I would spend the money towards the trip, ie. snorkel, storage, dtronic....

If the trip is a year away then snorkel ans lockers may be the way to go...

Well I think I'll put the sway bars back on then, and make/buy some swaybar disconnects.

                    Andy,

What kind of rubber are you running?

If you don’t already have them, a good set of mudders can make a huge difference.

                          Hey PCM,

I will start doing the mods when I get back to Canada, which is really september. What I think I might do is get the Snorkel, lockers, rear storage done, roof rack, Automatic transmission temp gauge and some heavy duty underbody protection.

I figured that I don't really need the the Exhaust or chip just yet because I really only put about 6000kms a year on the 4wd.
