Hi there all im just reading through your forums on the battle between vx vs gxl vs grande. Im looking to buy my first 4x4 in the prado as my intro to offroading and am stuck choosing between these models in terms of which is most off-road capable combined with the ease of getting it to that capable state (with mods). Understanding I've read through alot (if not all ><) of the posts on this topic however cant fully comprehend alot of the technical jargon.

In buying the prado im looking at instantly adding:
2-3 inch lift kit
Bilstein//Lovels combo
ARB Deluxe Winch Bar
Dual Battery
Currently thinking maxxis bighorns - LT285/70R17

Im aiming for a little extra clearance under the ride and am not sure if the VX KDSS system//Grandes airbag suspension limits my lift/suspension choices or makes them anymore difficult than the GXL? Could anyone clear this debarkle up for me

The VX runs the same suspension as the GXL. The Grande has TEMS shocks to adjust from comfort to sport mode and airbag suspension in the rear which is auto levelling.

In terms of upgrading the suspension, both the Grande and coil sprung model (i.e. VX, GXL, GX & Standard) can both be upgraded to aftermarket suspension quite easily. If you were to upgrade the Grande, you will still maintain the rear self levelling bit and if you changed the shocks, you will lose the TEMS function.

A cheap way to make a small improvement to the Grande's suspension is to change out the front springs to get a bit of height. Then tweak the back end and raise it via the adjusters for the airbags. The next step up is to replace the entire front suspension and rear shocks. Lots of info on here about this. The most popular method for a full upgrade is from Darren at Autocraft who are in Geelong but have installers all over the country.

Hey Matleza, welcome to the forum. You may want to post this in the 150 section - given you are talking about KDSS, etc. makes me think you are not buying a second hand 120.

Amts, nice breakdown of it all definately clarified a few thigns for me. I've emailed Darren and will be looking at the overall costs to sum up my choice between the GXL and Grande

I've just read so much about people positive reactions towards the KDSS so i thought i'd value up the option of buying a new VX vs 120 Series Grande.

Didn't realise you were weighing up between a 150 VX vs a 120 Grande. The 150 VX does have KDSS in contrast to the 120 VX which has the same suspension setup as the 120 GXL.
