  • My monster truck handles like a hovercraft

    We have raised OME springs & Nitrocharger shocks. We have some serious flight when we hit creek crossings and bigger bumps at speed. Lands OK though.

    I'm a fan of Konis, has anyone had experience with Konis on the Prado?

    I don't know about Konis (though they do make some great car shocks) but I have Bilstiens installed and I'm very happy with the performance. A number of times I've seen obstacles too late and hit them at speed only to come out the other side impressed with how well the Bilstiens have handled it.

      do you actually like you prado? so far we've got a diesel guzzling tire shredding hovercraft! next you'll say it's got a big arse and it can't cook!! :lol:

        Well, actually, it can't cook. Buying a prado is a bit of an experiment, it flies in the face of all the hardnosed 100 & 70 philosophers out here in the outback, but frankly I wont live with the fuel "economy" that they offer (ironic that my prado currently uses more!!)

        Yes I do like it; the big learn is that I'll never buy another second-hand car in my life. It's loverly to boing down these roads in compared to my work ute (78 series). I have a fair bit of confidence that once I sort it it will be a right ripper.

        I'm still on the side of bemusement rather than frustration, although after the second tyre went bang I was starting to have grave thoughts and with a Warburton Roadhouse lighter in my back pocket it was tempting to add it to the outback collection of lesser-loved vehicles.....

        Local mech says replace the fuel filter (seems it wasn't done at the last service) to eliminate that and then get the injectors cleaned properly. He said it runs too smooothly to be likely an injector pump timing or leaky manifold problem.

          Yeah, it's a fun game that one. I've been rooted a couple of times myself, I'm just so thankful I'm in a position nowadays to buy a new truck (although the way I'm going, I'll be driving this 120 'till the day I retire!)

          Hope you get it all sorted, Gordo - and you don't have to resort to the pyro-solution. Aren't those lighters called a Mitsubishi repair kit also? :lol:

            Bought me some RAIDs

            Being a bit of a die-hard Koni fan & arrogant prick (so I'm told), I blew off everyone's advice about Bilsteins etc I just went with what I know. I'm still waiting for some rears to come into the country, but the fronts have made it work so beautifully.

            Btw I removed the bullbar, partly for fuel economy but morely after the inner guards had torn themselves to tatters on the rough roads out here. Driving the car after taking off the bullbar almost made me leave the suspension alone; pissing off 80kgs (+ the spotties) of ARB's finest hanging out so far forward of the front axle gave the aged OMEs a new lease on life & the car wasn't anywhere neare the handful it was before. However, with a bit of heat in them they would started wobbling and bobbing around - they had done 170,000kms after all - so I went with the RAIDs.

            The first test drive I could find any bumps worthy of the Konis so I had to be creative & straight lined a few roundabouts (under controlled conditions Ossiffa) & these things are the bomb... just up, down, next? On the way out to Port August from Melbourne I took some dirt roads in, with about 20 instances of air time & it just drives on through, no rebounding back off the ground, no bottoming out, no wallowing, flollopping or other nasties. Can't wait for the rears (which have to come out of Holland - due next month).

            BUT the big take away and my advice to anyone about to shell out for a bullbar is to think very, very carefully about whether you really need one. You'll lose economy and handling, shorten the life of your front suspension components and if you drive out in the remote areas you can easily do some serious damage to your car. Hell, if I hit a camel I don't want the thing back anyway.

                I disagree on this comment , if you hit a roo with the standard prado bumper "its an insurance claim" and possibly the end of a family trip due to the new radiator.

                Its like a snorkle , you dont know you need it until something happens , then you KNOW YOU NEEDED IT !

                And i can also say the front clearance i have now with my ARB bar is MASSIVE , its better to scuff my bash plate than losed half the bumper and a foggy :lol:

                BTW i have a GX too , also bought secondhand and super happy with it ...

                  No argument from me, Billy... all depends on where you are, what you're likely to hit, what the consequences are... I'm limited to alloy bars anyway as the steel bar is too heavy out here with the corrugations (found THAT out the hard way & the insurance company wont help with that one, claim or no claim - yes, found that out the hard way too).

                    I don't think that Koni are available for the front of the 120's but you should be able to get some for the rear.

                    I had Koni on my last vehicle and they were awesome, and would not hesitate to get them again.

                        Yeah, they've got the lower ball joint set up for the fronts like the Tough Dog's do... Not a bad idea that!

                          I'd like to let that comment ride & lay claim to owning the balljointed shock, but that was an extra $300 per side that I really couldn't get with. The RAIDs come with either PU bushes or balljoints & I have the "cheap" version with PUs.

                              Koni have released version 3 now, trying to get the front valving right for the 120.

                              Judgement is still out on wether version4 will be required shortly.
