  • King Springs and which L/Travel shocks?

Hi, been reading a bit on this forum and trying to work out what is that appropriate balance point for me for get the 2008 GXL model D4D lifted.
Went to see my local suspension place who was a referral of my mechanic who has always done right by me as all this guy does is suspension, so I would prefer to stay local (I am in Melbourne).

After chatting for a while his recommendation was King Springs (not the HD ones) and my choice for L/Travel struts and shocks of either KYB Scorched, Monroe Magnum and EFS for $1100 fitted (I presume that is inc GST but forgot to ask). He said they were all pretty much at the same level, also if certain models numbers are better let me know and I will request those. If I want the next level up add $500 for Koni or Bilsteins. Any of them will give me a lift of 35mm he reckons. He also reckons 35mm this is about where you want to be to keep everything nice for both on and off road. My previous Patrol had about this much lift and it was about right for my needs previously.

The main advantage of the higher end shocks was that they are adjustable which maybe you only do once was his thinking and a longer warranty was his opinion.

As I am not a regular off road driver, almost all of the time is in Melbourne with a bit in the bush. I would love this to change but its the reality at least for a while.
At this stage the vehicle at the front is unmodified, most likely with put something in the battery bay (not necessarily a battery though) so I am not thinking much additional weight up front. The rear is likely to get a bit of weight from tent based camping gear sometimes we will have a off road camper trailer that is of the lighter variety. At some point likely to get a tinnie but not sure if that will be on the roof or trailer yet as we borrow or rent occasionally. (is that vague enough...sorry)

The price point and performance sounds about right to me but I am a novice.
So the questions are, which brand shocks for $1100? and what am I missing out on not going higher end?

Also he suggested doing a few hundred km's before doing a wheel alignment. Thanks for any assistance.

On Line store 4WD Direct has the following:

Bilsteins - set of four for $939

    http://www.4wddirect.com.au/scart/html/550.html

I bought mine from here - Quality shocks, (survived going to the Cape, with no problems at all).

Have you checked the suspension database? Lots of work gone in to collate the info.

Thanks for responses. I had looked at the database but it doesn't have any information on KYB and Monroe, maybe that in itself is telling me something. Based on that theory, that would lead me towards the EFS shocks as the cheaper option or take the leap, spend the $ and go for the Bilsteins. Something to think about...
Sounds like $1600 for Bilsteins and King Springs fitted is a reasonable price, any thoughts?

My preference is to get it done all at the same place where I can go back to if any issues or to get adjusted etc.

Kings/Lovells/Ridepro + Bilsteins are quite a popular combination here on PP.
Quite a few have gone with Ironman as well.

I think I paid about $1600 for Kings (raised but non HD) and Bilstein shocks about 2 years ago. I had stone guards added to the rear shocks as they were getting hammered with stones and being a monotube shock I was concerned. I also had Firestone airbags chucked in the back to help level out the ride when loaded up. As for the ride, I think its great, however that is comparing it to original Toyota stuff that had done 100,000kms...

As for the wheel alignment comment at the end of your first post, I would be getting one straight after the install of the new suspension, then get another one later on to make sure its all sweet.

Its very hard to compare suspension setups though, as I don't know too many people that have had multiple different setups on the same vehicle - it tends to be something people replace once during the time they own a vehicle. Just my thoughts...

The only reason KYB and Monroe are not in the database is because nobody has asked about them before. In fact, last time I spoke to Kings Springs they recommended KYB Scorched 4 shocks. I'll see what info I can dig up on KYB and Monroe.

I had the Bilsteins and raised (standard duty) Kings installed at the beginning of this year. I paid $1557 installed including wheel alignment.

The ride, though firmer, is decidedly more comfortable than the standard suspension with 80K km. Although raised 50mm, I found that the Prado became less inclined to wallow, and steering became more precise.

At highway speed, the Prado feels very secure, but maybe a bit of a fuel economy hit on account of the raise (there is an ARB bar out front as well).

This is all just to say that the suspension upgrade has not compromised the comfort and handling of the vehicle, as a daily driver and tourer, in any ways that I can discern. Rather the opposite.

                  SamH,
Spoke to Jason at KYB today, he was very helpful as well as being a Prado owner himself.
KYB Scorched 4s data is now included on the suspension database as well as the Monroe data:

KYB Scorched 4s 841004 front strut:
                  568mm open 403mm closed

KYB Scorched 4s 845022 rear shock:
                  570mm open 350mm closed

                  Monroe D8024 front strut:
                  554mm open 429mm closed

                  Monroe D8019 rear shock:
                  573mm open 354mm closed

                    Hi Paul,

I'm thinking of the same setup. Where did you get it done?
                    Cheers, Brad

                      braddo,

My suspension package was supplied and fitted by Andrew at Southside Suspension (Underwood, Brisbane). Around mid-year, Southside Suspension amalgamated with City Suspension. They are located in Springwood (Brisbane outer south). Well worth considering for South-East Queenslanders wanting suspension work done.

Raydes, do you have the Lovells Gas Legend front struts on yours as well as the rear shocks?

The Lovells Gas Legend 64612489 is 618mm fully extended, Bilstein BE5-A713 is only 580mm fully extended: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?20981-Suspension-Database

The 38mm difference between the two shocks equates to about 40mm extra down travel. The the sway bars stop the down travel at around 615mm shock extension, so rear shocks longer than this won't achieve any benefit without sway bar extensions and extended brake lines, which are close to the limit at 615mm shock extension anyway.

4WD Direct also sells the Lovells Gas Legend front struts and rear long travel shocks as a set for $519: http://www.4wddirect.com.au/scart/html/532.html
