  • Will GXL suspension work on Grande

I have a 2007 Grande and as I am planning some remote trips I am building my spares kit.

There is s person locally who has upgrade his 2008 GXL suspension and so has the following available for sale:
    2x rear shocks and springs
    2x front shocks and springs

I noticed from a post on this forum that the Grange and GXL have different requirements.

    My questions are these:
    1. Will the above work on the Grange in a pinch?
    2. What will the effects be due to the differences
    3. Can one ride with different shock on left vs. right hand side for a short distance?

G'day Anthony. you will be able to use all but the rear springs as the Grande does not have springs in the rear but Airbags. Replacement part numbers for aftermarket kit are the same in the GXL & Grande, so if you can get these parts for a steal then they would be OK as emergency spares to get you home. The grande has the TEMS system whereby you can adjust the stiffness of the ride by the dial on the centre console. There is a small electrical winder within the shock that screws down to increase/decrease this stiffness which is not available on the GXL so if you needed to replace a shock out on a track, it would probably be advisable to disconnect the wiring to the balance of these units to avoid upsetting the computer.

If you haven't already seen it, refer to the Suspension database
      http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...nsion-Database

Note that the open/closed/travel lengths of the shocks and struts are different between the GXL and Grande. Also, due to the TEMS, the damping rates will be different. You could use the stiffness adjustment knob to try an make the remaining TEMS shocks the same as the GXL shock.

I don't think you need to disconnect the wiring to the TEMS shocks as I don't believe there is a feedback loop. (note, I'm not sure but I don't see a reason for it) Just remember to tape up the connector for the rear and the TEMS control for the front to prevent dust getting in. Be sure to carry a shortened allen key for the removal of the front TEMS control unit off the top of the strut.
