  • sway bar extensions

I remember seeing a post somewhere about the superior engineering sway bar extensions, but I did a search and couldnt find anything.

    http://www.superiorengineering.com.a...oducts_id=8172

Would they make $205 difference and has anyone had any experience with them?

    Cheers

You need rear shocks longer than 615mm extended for sway bar extensions to be useful, and even then you only have to extend the sway bar 10mm to cater for a shock of up to 625mm extended. What rear shock are you running or intend on fitting?

I think the superior engineering links are the ones smakb has on his 150 and by all accounts they do the job allowing extra drop for the rear suspension. I made mini drop boxes (I will find the post and let you know tomorrow) and they are 47mm extra. If I made them again I would only make the extra drop 40mm, I have a 50mm lift with appropriate TD shocks/springs in the rear and with one rear wheel off the ground it is all good. My only problem is the sway bar link is very close to the lower control arm on full extension.

If you look at the sway bar there is a lot of spare thread left. If you remove the nut and fit a nut then washer right down the end of thread you can add about 20-25mm. There is still enough thread left to hold the top nut in place. This is enough to straighten the swaybar on a 50mm lift.

The other thing I just thought of is that you might not be able to lock the top nut as it screws down to the bottom of the thread and the top rubber would also be on the threaded part of the rod witch may chew it out over time.
As AMTS also mentioned: "The nut needs to screw down to the shoulder of the thread to get the right amount of compression on the rubbers."

As I mentioned earlier, on a 120 Prado you only need to extend the rear swaybar mount by 10mm to allow for shock lengths of up to 625mm extended. The standard 120 shock measures 575mm extended and the longest non-custom shock available off the shelf is the Toughdog BM401111 at 622mm extended, which is actually an 80 series Landcruiser shock that Toughdog also use on the 150 Prado. If you want to fit longer shocks, then you also need extended brake lines, extended bump stops and spring retainers. Unless you go the whole hog, then a 40mm+ sway bar extension is probably overkill.

The Air Bag Man does a 10mm longer rear sway bar bush as well as bumpstop spacers:

I used a simple 7mm spacer under the lower sway bar bush and 618mm long rear shocks to achieve 930mm rear droop and good flex. In the photo, the rear wheel is still on the ground:

You should consider changing your front swaybar links too... I've bent/snapped 1 of them and it tore through my cv boot which destoyed the CV as I was on Fraser. Here is a good replacement for the front http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/...s-p-20659.html

These would be a good option for the rear as they're adjustable http://www.wabfab.org/1995.5-2004-Ta...ypage.tpl.html

Very nice. Are the sway bars horizontal now?

No not quite horizontal, I set the links at 30mm over standard as a starting point, I would need to go a fair bit more than that to get the sway bar horizontal. My main aim is to get the maximum amount of articulation I can from the rear and these sjould be the final piece in the puzzle.

Haven't driven it yet so well see how it performs on and off road in the next few weeks.

                          Cheers Andrew

                            Bent front sway bar link

                            Bent Front Sway Bay Link

I was just putting the bash plates back on after installing my diff drop spacers and noticed the drivers side sway bar link was bent, glad I found it before it got any worse.

I have shortened and strengthening the front links. From what I can see shortening by approximately 20-30mm would help return the sway bar to a more horizontal position. I have checked clearance and could see no issues with a reduction in link length. Since I have a bent link i cut and shortening it, I made a sleeve to go over the join and welded it into position to restore the strength.

I cleaned and regressed the link balljoint and gave it a coat of paint. The Sway bar now sits much closer to its original position, I am yet to drive the car so don't know if it will make any real difference. I figured since the old link was bent I had nothing to loose, if it doesn't work I was going to replace the link anyway. Time will tell.

Interesting, I dropped the sway bar using a Superior Eng spacer blocks on the 150 but didn't do this on the 120 and didn't have a problem in 150,000km.
