  • Advice for my first Mod.

Hey guys this is my first post (hope its in the right spot) as im in the research stage of doing my first Modification to my (and the Mrs) Prado.
It is an '07 GX 120 series diesel.

Now my qeustion is what is the best way to raise the diffs higher from the stock height, Bigger tyres or a 2"lift?
Ive had different opinions on this matter from various tyre places and ARB stores.

My aim is to make the vehicle as a whole ride higher rather than just the body of the car.

    Any help would be great...
    Cheers guys

    Gareth.

In some states like qld unless you get an engineers cert you can't legally go larger than 265/65 r 17. It would work out cheaper doing suspension (if you installed it yourself). Personally I'm happy with my lift. And I'm still considering tracking down someone to give give me a cert for bigger wheels, but I have near new BFG's that I can't justify it yet...

So in my opinion suspension. Is a better way to go.

      Hi Gareth
Welcome to the wonderful world of PradoPoint.Com
Here is My view, Bigger tyres will raise your diff heights. However raising the vehicle with the addition of an upgraded suspension will also have the benefit of under body clearance and better load carrying capacity. You will need to check your state rules on maximum tyre diameters and vehicle raising limits.

      Hope this helps

Do your own research if you like, but I am led to believe in WA we can fit 265/70 tyres.

As a general rule, raising the suspension does not raise diff heights. What raising or upgrading the suspension does it allow you to fit larger tyres, which will then raise your diff heights. Furthermore, upgrading the suspension can also have the added benefits of improving handling, increasing load carrying capacity and increasing wheel travel. This of course all depends on what what of suspension you choose to fit.

I will vouch for this combo including the BFG ATKO's I have them all and rate them highly. Have you thought about doing the install yourself? The suspension is really quite easy, just take your time and don't rush and you won't break or damage anything. I did mine for the first time installing my Billie/dobbies, and with phone guidance from zordo (whom I brought the setup from really made the install quite easy.

Remember that if you put on bigger tyres you will also end up with less power to the wheels if you don't get the diffs ratios changed to match. The bigger the tyre the bigger the power loss. It might be fine with only a slight increase in tyre size but it sounds like you want BIG.

A suspension lift will raise the front diff as it is IFS. Bigger tyres is the only realistic way to improve rear diff clearance.

Let me know what prices you can find in Perth. I'm looking at the same setup for mine but not until August.

Happy with the bilsteins dobinsons combo. Lots of people are happy with the kings springs too.
                        Regards, Heath.

I dont want to go really big, I just want a little reassurance that my diffs wont bottom out every time I do some rock climbing or fall into some deep ruts, I understand that I will never fully clear everything...Or will I ever be the best driver and tackle everything in my way...

Any idea how much power I will lose? As it is only a 3.0L 4 cylinder, hahahah.

And will self installation void warranties or insurance etc???

In regards to warranties no, ur suspension will now be covered under the warranty of the particular company, and my insurance didn't care, well they bumped up my premium but that's to be expected with a full exhaust and 2" suspension lift
