  • Bullbar tyre clearance issue

    Hi pointers,

I'm hoping some of you may have some thoughts on how I can solve an issue I'm having. In short the issue is the bullbar scrubbing out tyres under full suspension compression. Not sure what section it should be in but I think suspension is a good starting point.
I have dobinsons HD springs and bilsteins shocks. Suspension is about 3 months old. The front of the car has steel bar and winch (rope not cable) and mickey T MTZs, (265/70/17) it's a 2008 D4D with 90k on the clock.
I would have thought my suspension set up can handle this weight. However at the bottom of 'woops' when of road, the whole thing compresses and the lowest part of the bullbar scrubs the side biter area of the tyre.
This issue only started to happen on my last couple of trips off road. On road the car sits reasonable firmly, and doesn't bounce at all.
I have spoken to both the suspension supplier and bull bar supplier, without much help, although the conversations are on going.
The only solution I can see is grinding part of the bull bar off, obviously I don't want to do this.

I wonder if any of you have any ideas of things I can check? I think I have provided all the relevant info, but if I've missed something please let me know.

    Heath.

Here are a couple of pics.

    And one of the damage

    Regards, Heath.

    To try and be brief,
U know when u talking to an expert at places like ARB, about say.... Tyres or a Bullbar and they ask has it got a lift?
W.t.f? It's still going to have full travel to the bumP stops when offroad!

The problem u have happens and I've seen it on prados and Hilux"s
Did u have a wheel alignment? Caster will change the distance to Bullbar.
Do you have modified offset? Once u reduce +30 to say +10 or +20
your outer edge is closer to bar and mudflap.
To rectify in the past, I have removed the ARB undersheilds, straitened the rear fold an refolded at say 15mm further forward
    And refitted.

    Hope that helps.

      Hi ####,

I did have a wheel alignment after fitting the bull bar and lift.
If the under sheilds are what I think they are , re folding sounds like a difficult job?
      Regards, Heath.

You can see if they can adjust your caster back so it clears it.

        Or

Folding is hard, take take them to metal fabricator shop easy job for them,
I did it once with a big mash hammer, flattened, tec screwed a piece of steel to where I wanted to fold and bashed it round.
Came up ok but with 3 extra drain holes in the plate, if u don't mind that, u don't really see it, that's the cheap hard way.

Thanks #### Ill try the castor first.

But it's not the under guards hitting the tyre, it's the actuall bullbar. Well I think anyway .
          Regards, Heath.

I suppose you have to confirm what's hitting first
Back one rear onto an embankment/ramp will put opposite Front wheel up
You can the have a look or better get mate to have a look.

If hitting bar itself str8 ahead, different story
Might just have too much offset modification....
            What offset u have?????

Not sure what the offset is, only that they a 17 x 8 dynamic rims. I'll get one off tommorow and see if it's stamped inside the rim.

What about adjusting the bump stop?
              Regards, Heath.

you can, but i wouldnt, as this will reduce wheel travel and make your vehicle less capable offroad.

Looking at that picture. You bullbar is out of whack & not lined up correctly.
First step is to align the bullbar properly.
                  Cheers

yeah thanks John, I tackled this on Sunday, and managed to get more adjustment in the bullbar than I expected. 25 mm on each side, buy dragging it up and fwd . so I am really hoping that this has fixed it. This time I gave all the bullbar mounting bolts a really good shoulder wrenching pinch up.
Just need to go for a drive and try to get full movement in the suspension this weekend. Fingers crossed!
                    Regards, Heath.

Make sure you leave a gap between the bullbar and body, otherwise it will rub/cause damage. I can't remember how much gap is recommended but I think it is around 20mm or so.
