  • OEM suspension expected lifespan

When can I expect the OEM shocks/springs to start sagging noticeably or better whats the lifespan of the OEM suspension? 100k kms 150k kms?

My front OME coils have dropped back to almost factory height after 4 years, 70,000 klms, 10,000 of bush, 60,000 of bitumen. I'd suggest if you have a bar on the front about the same time for the OEM.

The oem suspension lasts well. My brother in law still has the oem suspension on his 2002 90 series. He has done 250,000 or more from memory.

It is the fact that the oem suspesion does not support any excess weight that is problem as far as I was concerned. Hence my replacing it with aftermarket stuff.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

It depends. After 45,000km my oem suspension had sagged 3 inches.

what's the best way of measuring how much it has sagged? and is it springs that sag or shocks or both (I have newish springs and old shocks)

Springs sag, not shocks. Measure a straight line from the top of the rim closest to the ground and the bottom of the flare. Should be around 755 front and 780 rear factory measurements.

I bought my 07 GXL in December 2010 with about 85000km on the dial. An ARB bar was installed by the original owner, and he had done a little horse float towing. Original front springs had sagged - about 735mm measured as above. Rears were close to factory. Given that the springs had sagged, and the front shocks were weeping, I needed little further excuse to upgrade.

I guess upgrading is the way to go. the only issue I have is the cv joints leaking/wrong angle if you raise it too high

I never even saw or drove my car with the OEM stuff. Love the comfort of TJM Gold, it is like driving a 4wd limo. I always thought OEM is only really good for about 50k yes u can do 150k but how good is it really working.

I just replaced our OEM after 64,000km in our 120 with an ARB bar to OME. The car doesn't dive under brakes anywhere near what it use to. To the wife it was a massive lift but I explained to her it is only approx 40-50mm over what it was when new.

Never really heard of the springs sagging, is this a 4x4-specific phenomena?

My Prado has 285,000kms on it and the original springs are still in it. Shocks obviously gave up long ago but springs seem fine. When I measure my height and compare it to original spec it seems the back has dropped about 10mm. If you will be towing or regularly carrying heavy loads then even aftermarket springs will sag with time.

I have towed my 6,500 lbs trailer with the car, so I guess I should expect some sagging in the future, I hope it is the distant future.

I have seen and removed oem (tokico) struts/shocks done well over 200,000klms seemed to be working well still
Just body roll with standard springs.
I think the internal quality of the oem is second to none, it's just the design eg. Travel, welds, rod size etc let it down.

Ome.... Well Monroe say change shocked every 80,000klms for road use,
                              MOnroe make for Ome/ARB.

Springs sagging 3 inches? 75mm? That's gotta be a record? Never heard of that.....
