had a bad thought last night.
 oh no, did we refit the rear swaybar.
early this morning checked it.
drivers side rear all good,
ops: oops the passanges side was not.
that's what happens when you rush.
i was 100% on the front, but was lazy with the rear.
had my mate (non mechanical) help me.
a tradesman should always check the apprentices work before letting
the car out.
glad it was mine and not a customers.
just a fews gouges and a bent bracket. could have been worse

Hey Guys
New here and a proud new Prado owner,
Looking at these pics it’s easy to see why Prado’s are often criticised for being 'mums taxi's' or Toorak Tractors.
I have owned a GQ patrol with OME springs and shocks for the past 11 years and from the look of these pictures the GQ has it all over the Prado for axle articulation. (I imagine the 80/100 series does too).
Why is this?
Is the no way of improving what can only be described as poor wheel travel in this car?
Doesn’t somebody make a decent after market suspension package?

I guess I am just blabbering on about the front end on a Prado as the rear beam axle is setup in pretty much the same way as the Patrol or LC 80/100.
Don't get me wrong guys, I love the Prado but as I said, the pics displayed in this topic don't really show much ability  .
I may just have to come to terms with the way the Prado is...
I personally like to have all 4 wheels on the ground on an obstacle, giving maximum traction and drive to the vehicle.
I have a lot of experience in 4WDing have owned a 4WD since the mid 90's and have driven regularly the 110 LandRover Perentie used by Army. (I’ve got to say they are as rough as guts very difficult to keep out of the workshop but, an excellent 4WD)
Any feedback would be great.

the prado has around the same range of travel as the 100 series crusier with ifs. the reason that not much more travel can be got out of the front end is because of the angle on the cv joints, to much angle and they will bind, same for the ball joints. a few of the fellas have changed control arms to allow for and inch or some more travel but this comes at a premium. most aftermarket suspension kits have around same travel, usually 2inch lift for the front. as for on road ifs craps all over live axle for handling, but thats another story, as for front end flex they havent got much, you could try shavin ya bump stops for more up travel or installing different control arms as mentioned, otherwise the just chuck a locker in the front end. it wont keep wheels on the ground but it will keep ya going foward more. prados r also partically front end heavy so they will often lift rear wheels before front, so maybe some experimenting with rear end will also help as well, eg removing rear swayabar , longer shocks etc etc. cheers samohad an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Ramp Travel Index (RTI)
1) Patrol GU IV - 579
2) Range Rover HSE - 561
3) Prado 120 GXL - 546
4) Discovery SE - 528
5) Landcruiser 100 GXL - 498
6) Jeep Grand Cherokee - 420
7) Pathfinder ST-L - 384
RTI gives a good indication of how much a vehicle will work in the rough stuff.
These are stats for 2005 model vehicles.
