Front Super Bump Stops - "Wheelers"

Saw these on a lifted FJ Cruiser so thought I would give it a go on the Prado. These are supposed to soften the hard thumps associated with maximum compression because of the softer material giving a better ride and causing less shocks to the suspension components. For $85 delivered thought it would be a good experiment. Just unscrewed the originals and screwed these straight in - about 30 minutes work. It will be interesting to see how they go, cant say I notice any change around town so need to get on some bumpy stuff to check them out.

Photos show the comparison with the original (that is the grubby one), and the Wheelers super Bump Stop and fitted. I have a front lift of about 1 inch so not a lot of clearance when on the flat, but seems about the same as the promo video.

Hi dock, I've looked at these and have thought about them.

What do you think of the quality of the rubber and possible longevity?

No idea! These are not rubber rather a dense polyethylene like material as far as I can tell. As such it should be resistant to oils, grease and deterioration. They are certainly a lot softer than rock hard originals, you can feel the pliability with your hand but really can't compress them. If you had stock suspension it may be hard to fit as they would be touching the bottom arm all the time. Be ideal for a 2" lift, my 1" lift gives about a 1-2cm clearance, just enough clearance for these to work at their best. Anyway it will be easy to put the originals back on anytime if it does not work out.

I've got these same ones on my rig but from Monsterrides, with my big lift they are beneficial. Haven't tested them out properly yet but i will soon.

Gave these a bit of a workout on the weekend, unfortunately not with the other ppers at Moonta rather south of that. Anyway, these seem to have smoothed things out in the front end. Ride seems a little more compliant and no sudden thumps from the front end. Pretty happy with the outcome for $85 a good bit of kit. Mind you you do need a mild lift in the front end to get the most out of these.

Got a set of these for the Prado from the Monster Rides guys, I'm yet to fit up unfortunately as I don't have the tools to safely swap the bumpstops over yet. Taking the wheel of will make it easier to do. Also as suggested you wanna have minimum 2" lift to fit these up. The standard bump stops are pretty much a stop where as these are progressive so will be a much smoother stopper when suspension is compressing.

I emailed Matt and he sent some out to me. He was great to deal with, quick to reply and let me knew when he was posting off the gear etc.

I'll put a bit of a photo how to once I'm done, as well as some GoPro footage.

Hi Playdo,

You just need to jack up the rig to give abit of room and have a shorter allen key to fit in or cut the one supplied to suit as its abit long.
I had the perfect size in my toolbox and it took about 15 minutes to do both sides.

No special tools required. Just jack up the front wheels, turn the wheel to full lock, so you can access the bump stop, no need to remove the wheel, grab a big shifter or multigrips, whack it on the old bump stop, unscrew ( little touch of WD40 helped), little touch of WD40 on the screw that goes thru the bump stop, use the Allan key to tighten it up and you're done.

Be great to see some Gopro footage and see these in action on the Prado.

Yeh don't have either of those heh heh.. I'll wait till I'm back off holiday and get access to a workshop through a friend and sort it out though. Then I can use a big trolley jack in stead of the bottle jack and put in a jack stand for safety sake while I'm wedged in the wheel guard trying to swap stuff over.

Don't want to rain on the parade, but just make sure, being soft they don't compress any further than the stock ones.
Reason being, if the suspension is allowed to go too far, the strut could become the bump stop.
This can result in broken struts.

I guess there are degrees of "softness". Compared to the original these are soft...er. I had a pretty good look at the video clip and froze it on maximum compression and it seems about the same depth as the standard bump stop at that point. If someone is brave enough to put their gopro under a prado and film it we would get a better idea!
