  • Best height lift for 120 series

I want to put a efs lift into my prado. Just wanted to see what size people recommend. Thinking a 2inch or maybe 3inch. Anyone have photos of either height. cheers

Most people go for the 2" lift due to it still leaving the CV's at a safe enough angle. Have a look through some of the 120 rig build ups and you will see heaps of 2" lifted setups. Ive been really happy with mine since the lift and with the bags in the rear I have not had any problem carrying the extra weight or getting hung up on tracks. With a suspension lift you can also factor in tyre size which also aids a little to the overall stance. Others on the forum have gone over 2" and have some very trick setups. Have a think about what you want the lift for, hard tracks or touring? Remember that with most mods you will start to sacrifice one area to gain in another.

    Cheers

      Hi guys.
I'd really love to lift mine too but real worried about ride quality. Lifted my 2010 SR5 2" with tuff dog stuff and the ride was horrible!!ended up putting the stck gear back in.
Dueler, did you notice a difference in ride?

Mate it will all depend on the spring weights you run. You can have 2 of the same car with two different 2" setups. Again you need to sort out what your Prado is going to be used for? Towing, touring etc etc. it will dictate what you will need in your suspension. Best thing I did was do all my major mods first eg. bar work, rack, cargo storage system and get the baseline constant weight of the rig and then allow a bit more for when she is fully loaded with fuel and camping gear. Took it to the place that did my OME setup and talked to them about what it was going to be used for, its weight and how close to GVM it would be. From there they recommended the spring weights for the front and the back as well as air bags in the rear that can be adjusted when packed and unpacked. Once done I loved the ride height and handling. Combined with the tyres at the right pressures its a joy on and off the tracks.

Be aware though that if your going to go with a heavy constant weight spring that you will need to maintain that constant load on the vehicle for the suspension to work correctly. Dont expect to throw a set of heavy springs and take all the weight off the rig and expect it to handle correctly. Same goes for softer spring settings.

Best piece of advice......do your suspension setup as one of your last major mods. Get the rig setup how you want it and drive it into the shop with a close value of the rigs weight (put it over a public weigh bridge) and talk to the shop about what you are wanting the car to do and go. Nothing worse than getting you prado lifted and then realising that your setup is not up to the task later down the track.

Talk to Jason at Wholesale Suspension (retail member) he worked with me on getting the right bits for my lift, gave greta advice on spring ratings etc. based on what I had in the car (bar, batteries etc..) and what sort of driving/touring/tracks I'd be on.

I ended up with Tough Dog adjustable and they are awesome, with a set of Polyairs in the back to help when I tow. Jim, not sure what the issue was, but the Tough Dog is great. Soft ride (setting 0) sent me bouncing all over the place, like there were no shocks at all, but a setting of 4 up front and 1 out back, gives a much better ride than original. Went offroad on the weekend, changed them back to setting 0, and handled great on the tracks.. nice ride, great articulation (no photos though).

I also got a Diff drop kit from AMTS and Jason also supplied the extended sway bar links as my shocks are extended droop... i.e., not Prado shocks...

Thanks guys. I reckon the place I got my Hilux done at must have got it all wrong. The front end used to skip across undulating sealed roads (dont even ask about corrigations!) and when I took them out the rubber in one of the front shocker loops was totally stuffed and the other was leaking! Just way too hard I think.

Only other thing I'm adding to my rig now is a second battery up front. I tow a camper trailer so will proly go with air bags too. Had Polyairs on my 80 series (standard shocks/springs) and thought they were great towing Jayco's.

Be mindful of the legalities too. It is a whole new game now in Qld with the QCOP and NCOP (google PradoPoint+NCOP) if you have stability control (VSC or ESC).

In the past a lot of 2" lifts were down to the CV angles. But with a diff drop (easy job) things were ok again for a 3" and sometimes 4" lift. Under the now superseded light vehicle modification rules it was a maximum of 2" without an engineering certificate and modification plate. Most of us didn't want the trouble and cost of that. Some insurers wouldn't touch the bigger lifts as well. I know I was asked by a couple of insurers whether the lift exceeded 2".

If you have VSC make sure the suspension supplier gives you the green light in writing on the quote because the rules now require the VSC to be proven to work as the manufacturer intended. I know that both ARB and TJM will do this because that was a question that I put to them before modifying the 150 but don't know about other suppliers.

And I should add that my experience of suspension kits is that they are better than OEM. More controlled movement of the suspension with better damping and better spring rates but you have to have the right set up. I have had ToughDog, ARB and TJM over a number of vehicles and for each one detailed what the car would be carrying. Dual batteries, steel bar, winch, etc. Too stiff and you will hate it, too soft and it will be dangerous. At the rear I recommend putting airbags inside whatever rear springs you get. Can be polyairs (my choice) or any of the others that are out there. These give you the ability to go for a lighter spring for everyday use and then pump up the airbags to compensate for trips and trailer loads. Again it depends on use and standard equipment. Talk to the suppliers is the best advice.

How you drive your car will dominate your choice of ride height. My previous 120 had 50 mm lift in the front with OME but this was not a good (in my opinion) setup. The front was too high as so was the rear (60mm). On downhill runs the rear wheels would constantly leave the ground. This was due to ride height too high and spring rate too stiff. The suspension would run out of down travel. My present car is a later model D4D 120 and lift in the front is 40mm and rear 50mm. Rear spring rate is the same but the fronts on this car are standard raised King springs. Shocks are Bilstein front and rear. The issue of running out of down travel has been reduced, corrugated roads can be travelled safer, and road handling has been dramatically improved.
This leads to another story of how the stiffness of the front causes under steer. A softer front will also allow slight body roll, which in turn allows the rear suspension to 'steer' due to changing angles of the control arms. Both my cars run the same types, pressure and weight. The difference was significant. The 'slightly' lower car has better road manners, better off road travel, particually on the downhill runs. The only downside in 10-15mm less ground clearance under the front crossmember. The stiffer springs also had to be controlled with stiffer shocks, unfortunate the OME shocks just could not control the spring rate. I replaced these with Bilstein and control was improved.
Maybe I'm getting old but I like the 40mm front lift.

MDSimpson you say "" Went offroad on the weekend, changed them back to setting 0, " Why ?? changing them back to 0 will give you no more wheel travel , they are still the same length, and the car must bounce and roll all over, topping out the shocks and hitting the bump stops as you go over rocks ect.

I think you missed the 2nd half of the conversation where she says she needs to get those 10" heels she saw at the shops the other day to compensate for the lift.

I think she is confusing inches with cm. Which explains her comments about "12 inches" to her besties.
