Has anyone fitted a body lift kit with the Bilstein suspension setup? What are the pros and cons of going down this path?

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure I am understanding what you are actually wanting to know Dustie. The now Platinum Bilstien kit is a lift kit in itself, are you referring to something else to go with the kit like Poly Airs?

I don't think anyone makes a body lift "kit " for a 120 do they?

Pro's- you'll be able to fit bigger tyres, rear bumper and door sills further from the ground.

Con's- Vehicle will be unroadworthy in all states, although with enough money anything can be engineered to pass roadworthy.
Pain in the arse to fit, bumpers/bull bars need to be modified. Possible brake line mods. Possible steering mods.Possible radiator mods. Possible fuel line mods. Possible wiring loom mods.
Raises centre of gravity (Prado is already bad, especially with a suspension lift already done).
Dosen't raise anything attached to the chassis (drive train, axle, fuel tanks, exhaust etc)

          Thanks for the reply MickL.

Mav, I already got the Bilstein setup, was checking out the feasbility of doing a body lift for extra height.

            Dustie,

I have just gone through the same thing with my setup. I have raised the front up to around 795mm. Will be doing the rear Monday hopefully. My ridepros seemed to have sagged a little at the back. Putting in new springs and air bags.

Just a few lines at this stage....

I called in to Opposite Lock, Orange, today and looked at a Prado which was being fitted with a 2 inch lift with Tough Dog "medium" gel suspension and polyairs. Just a quick thank you for all your posts, which I'll spend the next few days going through as I try to work out the best brand/set up. I've got some chrissy money to spend!!

                Hi Crammy,

What did you do to raise the front to 795mm? Did you change the "circlip" position to the top one? (I know mine is in the middle position) which gives only 770mm.

My BIL was suggesting for his 80series standard shocks, new springs and a body lift kit rather than a suspension lift is supposed to be a cheaper alternative. Since I've already forked out on the Billy setup, I was exploring whether a body lift kit would help to get extra height and also NOT require an engineers report.

What springs are you going for this time?

                Cheers,
                Dustie

My opinion, if you want extra height buy a GQ or 80 series and 'go sick' with suspension mods. I had a bodylift in the Mav and wouldn't ever consider it for the Prado for all the legal and mechanical reasons previously posted.

                    Hey Dustie,

I had an extra circlip groove machined into the strut 10mm higher than the top one (because of winch). In your case you will get another 10mm or so if you move yours to the top position which should be ok. The only thing you have to be careful of going higher is toping out the shocks. The way to find out how much higher you can go is to measure the front droop. Minimum should be 60mm.

Measure this by jacking the car up until the front wheels are off the ground, then measure bottom of rim to guard. Subtract your 770mm from that figure and that will be your droop amount.

The other option is to change your springs out and go for something like king springs. They have pretty good heights but are not as soft as the ridepros. I've ordered a set of kings for the back and some firestone airbags. Will hopefully have them in by Monday. If I'm still not happy I'll put a set of kings in the front too.

Price wise the Kings KTRR-102 (Rear raised non HD) were $196. I'm guessing the fronts would be a similar price. If you can do it yourself you're laughing.

                    Cheers,

I will be putting a 2'lift in my 04 GX very soon and after studying all your forums,I think the general opinion is the Darren McRaigh Billstein/Lovell set up is the best way to go but as it has been a long time coming,I just wanted to know if there was any new combinations or opinions etc.before I fork out the hard earned! Its my wifes car when Im not using it, I live in Lake Macquarie near Newcastle, looking for an installer/supplier in this area familiar with Darrens set up.Any feedback would be appreciated.

Did speak to you mate, I'm extremely happy with the Kings in the back. The Kings have removed a lot of roll that I experienced with the ridepros. Sure they're a little firmer but probably not as much as the heavier ridepros. They don't drop as much either with a load in the back.

                              Couldn't be happier!
