  • Suspension options option options

Ok.. here a question for you: I have a diesel 07 Grande with an ARB bullbar. Since i had the bull bar installed the nose has a dipped down. I intend to upgrade the suspension (front only as i have told "you can't touch the back mate"). I have measured rim to car for front to be 880mm and rear to be 922mm.

I am looking into a 50mm lift via Bilstien shocks and lovell springs for the front. An alternate suggestion was not to install springs and use new OME struts with ARB spacer.

Objective of lift is to both provide better handeling (particularly under brakes) and better stability and clearence for off road. I am install ing Cooper ST's as well.

    Thoughts?

Best to check with a few people on the site who are already installed
50mm lift in the Grande and see if and how happy they are with it.

While I can tell you my thoughs, I don't drive a Grande

You might have a problems with insurance if you go with a spacer option...

Why not replace the front coils with HD ones?

Thanks for those constructive suggestions, particularly in relation to the search function, wow. ops:

Having now utilised this brand new skill, i am still seeking some guidance on front lift. Be it new HD springs(lovell) with Bilstien shocks(total of 50mm lift on front), or OME shocks, factory coils...with spacer (20mm lift).

I've got two options as you can see and would like to gain some commentory on pro's and con's of iether option.

Thanks lc_120_man. I did ask about impact on insurance with my insurance Co, did not seem to be an issue....but you never know until you make that claim

The first option bilsteins/lovells would ride/handle much better. (Not sure
about HD springs thought, that would make the ride very firm...)

The second option would be much cheaper...

Personally I would go for bilsteins/lovells in front as you going to feel
the difference every time you drive the car...

Also I would check with Darren from ATS what he recommends as he
done quite a few of them...

I would highly recommend the billies and ridepros from personal experience. It's an awesome combo, best of all the billies are adjustable for when you add the heavy stuff and mated with the ridepros offer just as good a ride as standard with HEAPS better handling around the twisty stuff.

I don't think I'd like to be mucking around with spacers either. It sounds a bit messy.

                Awesome kit.

Thanks all, i now have a higher level of comfort and will proceed with Lovell HD springs and Bilstien shocks for the front lift.

The spacer option did concern me a little. Some people have noted a concern with HD springs at the front. Could anybody elaborate (I'm a novice)

The HD springs will significantly stiffen the front of the Prado. If you do not have sufficient weight (bullbar, winch, dual batteries) you run the risk of having a very harsh ride. If you do err on the side of a softer ride the Bilstiens have an adjustable seat position that allows you to preload the spring and effectively raise the front whilst retaining the softer spring rate.
-But if you do this and the weight of the extras is too much for the softer springs it will handle like a boat. It's all about getting the spring and seat height that matches what accessories you have installed and the only way to know this is experience. Hence why it has been suggested to talk to someone like ATS who have setup numerous Prados with different accessories fitted.

Thanks again all. I spoke with Darren at ATS Geelong. The mans a ledgend. Confirmed spacer option not the way to go and he has provided some advice on setting the Bilstien shocks to make the ride a little less teeth shattering.

                      So I'm all set.

I wish they would fit the prado with Kinetic suspension like they do on the US model. Why do we have to miss out?
