  • Front Shocks

    Hi all, this is my first post here

    I need to change the front shocks on my 2008 SWB 4.0 Prado, I've gone through many threads here, but I still cant make up my mind !

    I have 265/70/17 tires and standard original suspension (no lift) and no other modifications. I intend to keep the car this way. One of the front shocks is leaking oil so I decided to change both shocks. I would like to maintain the current comfort level and add some more ride compliance/control as I mostly do highway driving (120-140 kph) and light off-roading once a month. Which Shocks should I go for?

    - RAW Predator
    - EFS Elite
    - KYB
    - Tough Dog Foam Cell/adjustable
    - Sachs
    - Lovell

    Appreciate your opinion and feedback. Thanks

    Out of those 4, 2 I wouldn't touch.

    I'd say go the KYB, if that was your only options.

      I added Sachs and Lovell to the list, any feedback on these? and which 2 you wouldn't touch and why?

        Hey,

        If you're using your original OEM coil springs, you can run a front strut that is a bit longer, such as a Bilstein 712. Not that it's important if you're keeping the Prado at factory ride height, but you will get a bit more droop. I wouldn't bother running anything longer than a 550mm open length strut if you're keeping the Prado at factory ride height.

        See here for how changes in strut length can effect your droop at different ride heights;

        Take a look also at the Suspension Database which has a nice list of struts;

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...nsion-Database

        Sachs are not something I would consider in a 4wd, more as a replacement for OEM struts/shocks in road cars.

          Thanks Mark for clarifying this. Now I looked at the database thread and I found Monroe to be very close in numbers to Bilstein 712, except for the fact that the first is Twin tube and the second is Mono, out of the two which do you recommend? and how do they compare to the original standard strut?

            Sachs make good suspension, but I don't use it in prados.

            The ones I don't touch are because of seeing them fail & poor ride quality.
            I specialise in Prado, including suspension so I see a few. I'm not going to name brands, others may have different experiences & history has shown it starts an argument & some get upset.

            You should Stick with well known suspension brands with good reputation.
            I currently use Dobinsons & Monroe & often a combination of those.

            From what you have mentioned KYB is good.

              So between Monroe and Bilstein 712, which one do you recommend?

                Monroe.

                Better
                Cheaper
                Aussie made in s.a
                One of the best!

                I have spoken with engineers & they will have longer travel soon.
                For now I use a Monroe front & Dobinsons rear, that combo is the best package a.t.m.

                The best for $1350 fitted, can't go past it really.
