  • Dobinsons MRR + Tough Dog spring combo

I'm thinking of going the dobinson MMR and tough dog spring combo.

Rear to have constant 300kg as I have a twin wheel carrier and will have draws.

Front will have arb bar and winch.

    I like a firm ride

    What's your thoughts?

    Hey,

In my opinion the heavy duty Tough Dog coils are waaaaayy too high spring rate for the 120, even for someone who likes a stiff ride!

The OEM spec coils on the 120 were designed in the 600lb/in range, and most run after market Dobinsons that are 586lb/in on the front. Those who run Kings are running 660lb/in. Heavy duty Tough Dogs (custom Kings) are 800lb/in, way too high spring rate.

As your rear setup is very heavy, you will really struggle to cycle out pitch with most King coils, and those that are stiff enough are too short in free height, particularly for a heavy setup.

I would look at Dobinsons coils rather than Kings for your setup, perhaps a 302/487 combo.

        Hey,

Even with softer coils up the front, the biggest issue with wheel carriers and built in cargo areas is combating vehicle pitch.

It's a tough problem to sort out, no matter which coil manufacturer you end up choosing!

With a heavy rear end you'll always struggle to get the front:rear suspension frequency ratio underneath 1:1. You can combat this to some degree with stiffer valving in the rear, and the adjustable Toughdogs might help you out in that regard!

            Hey,

Yep, airbags are the only way to help combat it! Even with a high rear spring rate, eg, 300lb/in, you'll still struggle with pitch due to all the extra weight in the rear. Airbags will combat some of it!

Up and down or fore/aft rocking motion along the axis of the car, like a see saw!

It's typically set off by undulations that are wheelbase apart in length, and most shocks will take several cycles to completely dampen the oscillation.
