    Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

this is intriguing: i had a similar problem with my 2003 TD about 2 years ago. it was an increasing in intensity, tremble, rattle in the steering wheel while braking, which would get worse the longer you drove but to me always seemed linked to the brakes. had local dealers main mechanic drive around in it and he felt it too, never heard of it before, didn't know what it was. since brake pads still ok, they decided to machine the discs... :? hhmmm.... mokay, if you think so. did it help? for a few days, and it was back with a vengeance. very irritating and sometimes not a bit scary, as if your steering wheel would come off in your hands.

finally got the solution after a bit of here and there with the dealer (which always seemd to involve machining the discs as their solution): by replacing the (still ok) brake pads.

    haven't had a problem since.

Our 2008 VX D4D recently developed the same problem. Had it in to the dealer today for the 60,000 service and showed them the clunk when rocking the steering wheel while stationary with the engine off. They crawled over it and said it was the intermediate shaft, and have ordered a new one for warranty replacement. They said the new shaft was a revised design, but has to come from Japan (aboout a month). Will wait and see how it goes.

          Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

          Hello,

That is not used for nothing to change the column, it is simply necessary to give circlips to its place.

          The solution is there:
          http://foro.kdjoteros.com/general-f2/to ... cci%C3%B3n

Me, in France, I positioned it back and there is no more clunk in the wheel.

            Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

            Looks so simple!

And from the explanation, it looks like Toyota modified the column so this doesn't happen anymore.

Now all I need to do is find someone who can work out how to make the pictures come to life!

If this works JBL, I will lend you my wife to complete works and cleanliness around your homestead!

Have now had the intermediate shaft replaced (P/No TO4522060150) under warranty. Took two trips to the dealer, as the circlip wasn't in its groove fully at first after the new shaft was fitted (See JBL33's post on Fri Jul 30, 2010) so, although the steering now felt ok, there was a new rattle behind the dash. All good now, the steering is back to 'as new' feel, and no more noises.

                Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

So seems as though the circlip is the culprit - this would go a long way to explaining things as others who have had parts of the steering column replaced would naturally have this circlip returned to the groove.

Judging by the link posted by JBL though and from what I can gather after the link was translated to English, there is no distinct alteration to the new column though.

Do you know if the dealer had to remove the column to fix the circlip maccamob?

They did remove and replace the shaft while relocating the circlip. Given that it was a warranty job, I assume that was the easiest/quickest way. However, the circlip wasn't the cause of my original 'clunk' problem - that was caused by too much play in the splines on the shaft. That went away with the new shaft, and the errant circlip caused quite a different noise. Seems as though there may be at least two different issues producing noises in the steering. In my case, the earlier one could clearly be felt through the steering wheel. The later one could not, and until the Dealer staff looked closely under the dash, we all thought it was a rattle caused by something else loose in there.

Thanks for the tip guys.! I took a look up under the dash this arvo and sure enough the circlip was sittin about 20mm down the shaft.! All sorted now and with a quick run over some rough ground appears to be all good again.!

As I had said it to you, the cause of the noise is the circlip which left its throat.
To maintain it in place in offroad, I put an end of tube PVC (tube iro of 16 mm for electric cable) cut in his length and threaded on the tree against the circlips and held with a quite tight collar.

I didn't get any pics sorry mate, but you need to take out the panel under the dash and the covers around the steering column itself. Then its pretty easy to see where to go from there. Take the bolt out at the spline just above the uni joint and then there's 4 nuts holding the main steering column up. Theres also several electrical plugs around the column to unplug and a plastic loom carrier that unclips off the column fairly easily. What area are you in mate, drop me a PM and I might be able to spin past and give you a hand. Firstly though grab a torch and stick your head up under the dash and check if the circlip has dislodged itself or not.

There does not need all to dismount to position back the circlips. It is simply necessary to remove the lower mask and then to look at the axis of the steering column which passes to the top of the pedals.
If you do not see the throat of the circilps, it is necessary to draw on the axis from the column downwards to reduce it a little and then to set up the circlips by pushing it with a screwdriver.

I will put image onlines this weekend

emailed Toyota and they replied that the Lexus and Prado steering column is not the same (actually the reply mentioned the driveshaft which was not the subject of the query but let's give them the benefit of the doubt). Anyone with knowledge to the contrary?

Are the steering columns the same, similar or totally different?
