  • HELP-Flipping Sway Bar!!!!!!!!!

Hey all have been fitting my OME suspension today, rear was fitted in about 30 minutes, didnt disconnect sway bar or anything just popped out old and in went the new. SWEET!

But the front thats another story, read through Chippy's fit, and all seems straight forward, it just says remove sway bar, and carry on, but thats where Ive hit my first glitch, how do you get the damn bolt, attaching the sway bar to the steering knuckle off?

The nut screws out and then just starts spinning the whole bolt/ball joint around, the bolt looks as though it has an Allen Key(I hope you also call them that in Oz) to hold the bolt so that the nut can come off, but the allen key hole is so shallow that I have just mangled it as it was a bit rusty, if anyone can make out anything of what Ive just said, do you reckon I just grind the bolt off and get a new replacement or is there a special trick to getting the sway bar off?

Also is getting the steering arm castle nut off as simple as Chippy says?

As usual thanks for all the help, this Forum is legend!!!

With the sway-bar, if you cut it you will need a new link assembly which wont be too cheap. Maybe try some crc (lubricating spray) or similar on the thread and clean it up so that the nut is not so tight on the thread. Other than that I'm not sure. An impact gun would undo it in a flash if you have access to one?
With the tie-rod end, undo the castle nut so there is about three turns left holding it on. Then with a decent hammer hit on the side of the actual knuckle where the tie-rod end goes in. Not sure if that makes sense? Hit on the part just above the tie-rod boot and you should see it just drop out after a couple of hits.

Did mine on the weekend and just used an impact wrench & 17mm (I think from memory) socket just came straight off. Do not, whatever you do hit the castle nut to drop the tie rod. I just used a stumpy 4lb hammer and gave mine a couple of good hits on the side of the joint just above the rubber boot and it dropped out. Also take care not to hit the rubber boot as it is filled with grease and as most of these units are non-greasable you could damage it sufficiently to warrant replacement, once the grease is released.

Am I being stupid but the nut doesnt come off without holding the bolt firmly, and only way to do that is by holding the bolt with the allen key hole which is knackered. Otherwise the bolt/ball joint just spins, does that sound right?

If you use a rattle gun the combination of speed and the impact will get the nut off.

and if it doesnt, try tightening it first, to pull the fitting into the arm harder, then undoing it with a good impact gun.
