  • Airbag Man Full Air suspension

It time to upgrade the suspension of my 08 D4D VX. Its not that there's too much wrong with what it has - it just needs more height to get me over those sidestep eating, muffler crunching dropoffs and ridges that seem to be everywhere up here in the high country.

I know quite a few have the Polyairs fitted to their coil suspension - I can see how that can help to reduce the sag but I'm particularly interested in the full airbag kit that replaces the coils and shocks with airbags and shocks. There's been a little talk on PradoPoint about the advantages and disadvantages of full airbag suspension but I can't find anyone who actually seems to have it fitted. The big attraction for me is the idea of being able to raise the car higher than normal to lift itself off whatever its caught on and once its safely moving again drop the car to its standard height. Sounds like a great idea but does it actually work like that?

I notice that its only possible to fit the airbag man system onto the rear of the Prado. That creates a range of issues. Should I leave the front as it is and fit the airbag kit spending most of my time driving at normal height and then when absolutely necessary lift the back to get out of trouble. Or should I fit a standard OME (or similar) 2" lift kit into the front of the vehicle and the airbags in the rear giving me even better clearance and spending even more of my meager supply of cash.

So - does anyone have an airbag man full air system installed or driven with someone who does. It isn't cheap and I'd really like to know that its worth the extra dollars before making the switch.

Yeh - thanks Hutch. I had seen those photos and I was impressed but I was really after feedback from members who have used this setup - not from the guys who created / distribute it.

I spent my day in Canberra yesterday visiting all of the 4x4 suspension places I could find to see what they recommended - including all those who are official airbag man installers. In most places I went in expecting to receive a quote on a full airbag suspension. That didn't happen. All of the places I visited spent time talking me out of it. I was a little surprised but all of them basically recommended that I stick with the standard replacement of new coils and shocks/struts with the recommendation depending on what they sold or preferred to sell - eg OME or TJM or Bilstein/Ridepro etc.

I guess that's telling me what I wanted to know but I think airbag man should be a little worried that none of his recommended installers actually encouraged me to install their products. From what I can read - the airbag man products are actually very good and I think they would have been exactly what I wanted on my car but none of the installers seem to think that and I would be have to be fairly silly to ignore the advice from every one of the installers I spoke to. So at the moment I am leaning heavily (no pun intended!) toward the Bilstein/Ridepro combination from Hume Off Road. I know that plenty of pradopointers have got that setup and seem to be really happy with it. So perhaps in this case the conventional solution may just be the best.

After all - like most members here, I just want the best setup I can get on my prized Prado.

It may be worth a call to Airbag man to let him know perhaps?

And with the Bilstein Ridepro setup, make sure that they are the correct parts to suit the Prado. There is plenty of threads on them here already with details in them.
