    Coil spacers?

    I had my Lovell's lift installed a few weeks ago, followed by a three day trip around the High Country. I and my dealer decided to go with the heavy duty coils front and back, but in hindsight the back was too hard, even when fully loaded, so they swapped the rear for mediums and now all's good. Well, almost... In the process the rear now sits about 10mm lower... Not a major thing I guess, but I'd like to lift the rear with some coils spacers (10-20mm) to regain the lost height. Other than that, I am pretty impressed with the Lovells - the front steers SO much better than before and I did a few tracks around Bluff's Hut that would've definitely scraped the belly with the factory set up.

    Tough Dog, for example, offer 20mm coil spacers for the Prado, so what I'd like to know is:

    Will any 'Prado specific' coild spacers fit the rear regardless of which coils/shocks I have (i.e. Lovells)?

    Any negative side effects I should be looking out for?

    I'll be onto my dealer about this soon, but he's moving premises at the moment and has his hands full...

    And yes, I have done a search, but found nothing conclusive/topical/recent, so mods - please don't shoot me! :wink:

    if you search "coil spacers" their is a few threads about front and back spacers.

      Yes, they go between the chassis and the bump stop that sits inside the spring at the top (see attached link)

      Any negative side effects I should be looking out for?
      Yes, you have to do some measuring. You may need bump stop spacers to stop the spring bottoming out (for the bump stops that act against the axle not the ones in the spring)
      You may also need longer shocks/shock extensions to release lost articulation.
      Might be un-roadworthy in your state (all states I think but I'm not 100% sure).

      I'll be onto my dealer about this soon, but he's moving premises at the moment and has his hands full...
      He may not be willing to help you if spring spacers are un-roadworthy in your state.

      And yes, I have done a search, but found nothing conclusive/topical/recent, so mods - please don't shoot me!

        Hutch - I did indeed search "Coil spacers", but as I said, nothing conclusive came up. For example, the thread MickL posted didn't turn up. Something amiss with the search function...?

        MickL - Many thanks mate - good stuff! Pretty much answers everything I needed to know and thanks for the link. No idea why the search didn't find it.

              I've had similar problems with the forum's search engine. Also, try usng google to search pradopoint, as it tends to produce better results. For example try entering this into Google:

              :idea: FWIW, I find the "site:" keyword is one of the more useful ones. Eg to find all results registered under the Australian domain, use "site:.au". Same applies to any website or domain.

                Coil spacers are not illegal
                They are in some,( if not all states.) SA I'm 100% sure of as I have a copy of the regs from the Dept of Transport.

                No reason is given as to why in the document but that would only take a phone call to find out why.

                  Another thing... I think the word "Illegal" gets thrown around a bit too much... Un-roadworthy is more suitable. You won't get dragged off to jail or cop a massive fine... the vehicle is just defectable and can be ordered off the road until the issue is rectified.

                  Being unroadworthy will also render your insurance void.

                  Having said all that...it's near impossible to spot spacers on a Prado without looking VERY closely for them.
