    Re: 2" Lift Questions

Thanks for your insights Madkore and IRON-PAWW. Ended up with a good resolution to this. They've replaced the Tough Dog foam cells with Tough Dog foam cell adjustables. They have 9 adjustment positions. Currently I'm running them on the softest ride and feel pretty much the same as the standard suspension around town. I've yet to get the time to have a fiddle and try them at about half way and on the hardest setting. Opposite lock charged me for the difference in price between the 2 types of shocks.

      Re: 2" Lift Questions

I had a somewhat smilar experience with Lovells'. At first I had 'firm' springs put in front/back and the front was fine (fairly heavy ARB steel bar), but the rear was too stiff. My local 4x4 store swapped the rear to 'medium' rate springs and now it's great. Also, bear in mind that even when you buy a brand spanking new car, the car's weight will have been resting on the springs since manufacture. When you put in aftermarket springs, they've never had any load on them. They do settle a little after the first month or so.

I was just going to suggest the adjustables as this is what I'm tempted to do. I'll be interested to see what you think in a few months - I'll be interested in a report.
At the moment the Prado is our everything vehicle - round town, 4WDing, camper trailer towing and maybe will be towing a small off road caravan in the future (business decision) so I want the ability to change it a fair bit too.

          Re: 2" Lift Questions

Ive recently put in Tough Dog 40mm Bore Adjustable Shocks with Heavy Duty Springs on the front and Medium Springs on the rear...

It seems to work well. I have them nice and soft around town (similar to the standard suspension ride) but crank it up hard when I am going out bush with all my camping gear on top. Makes good sense I reckon cause we all use our prados for different reasons (and very different loads) at different times...

With these adjustables shocks, basically what you are adjusting is the valving in the shock?

Hey appro. How are the Tough Dogs treating you? Have you had them out for a decent test? Was talking to the local 4by shop guy and he couldn't stop going on about how good they were. My concern was the rough ride on road for the missus and kids but he assures me it's not a problem. Was looking at these or the OME setup.

As previously written, I would be more interested how it went LOADED as thats when you are really going to find out if it was money well spent.

My Toughdog adjustables didn't survive 16,000km Kalgoorlie - Cape York. I was towing a Jayco at the time and had poly airbags in the rear ('98 V6 GXL). After the trip the local Opposite Lock dealer replaced the shocks under warranty. That was 2006. I just replaced the rears again this time with OMEs.

I think I have made my decision to go the king koni combo. Reading posts has helped me make my decision and not make mistakes other people have experienced. Thanks for all your advice guys.

OK, mildly off topic, but the closest I could get in the search..
I want a 2" lift kit, however, Everywhere I look offers 35mm or 50mm lift kits.
A few 4x4 shops tell me I only want 35mm... But if i order 50mm, will that be the 2" that I am after???
                        Thanks in advance.

Every car will be different, if your car is older with higher KLMs you may get more as the standard suspension would have sagged more over time, 2 inch is a rough guide, most get this and more legally in most states that is all you can lift a car so most dealers don't quote figures higher than 50mm. As a rough guide i had a 3yo car that had 50k and i got 50mm allround almost exactly with ome medium duty gear?? as i said every car will be different.
Have a look at the thread about suspension measurements i am sure you will find most have got 50mm +.

Likewise I lifted my 7 year old Prado with a 50mm lift, got 70mm on average haven't measured to see if it's sagged but they have been great for the last 2-3 months.

How hard are the shocks to adjust? can you just lean in underneath and turn a dial on the shock, is it something you can do when you get to the tracks or does it need to be done at home before leaving??
