I have this same problem, been putting up with it for ages. It seems Auto-Craft has diagnosed my issue- and upon investigation have found that the top shocky mount is indeed not centralised. This can be checked be visually checking/ feeling that the top rubber mount, washer and nut are centralised with the bolt in mount on top of the strut. If this is not centralised immediate action is required as mine has worn the hole in the shock mount to an oval shape and warn away easily 1/3 the thickness of the shock pin. This could easily lead to a breakage of the shock pin possible with very nasty consequences.

Have now removed both struts and will have to replace them and possibly the shock mount as well. Is this an issue with just lovell springs or is this occuring with other brands of coils?

Its an installer issue, not getting the locator centralised when installing the strut into the top plate.

Thanks Auto-Craft, but when I disassembled the unit the locator was indeed centralised and fitted into the top shock mount properly. This has not stopped the shock pin chewing through the rubber and steel locator then continuing on through into the shock mount. So I don't know the real reason why this has happened.

Thanks Auto-Craft, but when I disassembled the unit the locator was indeed centralised and fitted into the top shock mount properly. This has not stopped the shock pin chewing through the rubber and steel locator then continuing on through into the shock mount. So I don't know the real reason why this has happened.

The locator has probably dropped back into the hole after the damage has been done, and the hole has been enlarged.

The strangest thing... I was booked to get a new coil/shock put in this morning, but after a weekend of 4WD'ing the squeak is no longer there! Quiet as a mouse... go figure...

The dealer and I agreed to leave things as they are and if (or when) the squeak returns I'll go to them right away.

Many thanks for all the replies and suggestions - all of which have been pretty much eliminated. All is properly installed, top of the shock totally centered etc.

Let me guess.....All terrain 4WD?
Mine squeeked since new. I think he changed it after 2 visits.
Not so bad now, but still there.
Nothing a bit of spray lube doesn't fix

The problem is, it normally wears the shock shaft away to a point where it doesnt contact the washer to make the noise any more, but when you remove it, half the shock shaft has been worn, waiting to snap off at the worst possible moment.

It would pay to have the top rubbers and washers removed, and have a look down the centre of the hole with a mirror and light, to have a look, at least.

My self installed lovells upgrade has been in for a year now and has started to develop a squeek, what am i looking for when i look down the center hole?

Squeek is not to bad - i cant hear it when in the car with the windows up, but even the slightest movement (like resting your foot on the side step while doing up show laces) makes the front passenger side squeek.

My Ironmans have just developed a squawk abou 1.5 years/40000 kms and found the lower strut bushes have worn out. Not sure if this helps anyone?

Thanks for advice, my lift kit has been squeeking for over a year and have not worried about it assuming it was just rubber and similar to an old Falcon squeek. Tuned out after a while. Had a look the other day after reading threads. Both were obvious and were leaning to the right. Simply had to place hand on top and it was obvious they were not centred. Took back, was swapped under warranty with the new improved set. No squeeks. Just needed to know where to look.

My Toughdog front left has just started a loud high pitched squeak. Not much time tonight but all seems tight and ok. Only passenger side. Some scuff marks on the shock upper but the sound is definitely bushes and lower bushes at that. No excess movement (crowbar test both sides the same). Bushes look good. Have to do some more checking tomorrow night. Hopefully just dry bushes. Any suggestions if it is? Oh and 4.5 years and 120,000 km and no noises / problems until now.
