  • Failing Wheel bearings

Started out with a slight rear wheel bearing noise, took it to toyota they confirmed wheel bearing and replaced both rear wheel bearings.

All good for about 1 week then the rear right went, took it back and they said it may have been faulty bearing so they replaced it.

2 weeks later and its making the noise again rear left, they have said that it may have been damaged during installation to drop it back in and they'll replace. dropped in they had for 1 week and called to say that they do not have the correct tool to remove/install the bearings. This is when my jaw dropped. I paid $1400 for parts and labour for both rears to be replaced originally... who knows what they did. and if they are honest does anyone know what could cause these to keep failing... talking like 500-1000kms. The vehicle has 150,000 on the clock.

they said they took off all the axles, CV's etc and checked they were all square and balanced which all checked ok..could this noise be something else that is being disturbed then disappears for about 1week and returns? The bearings from what i'm told are worn so is definately them.

I have no clue where to go from here.. at least they are doing the work under warranty but out of the last 5 weeks they've had my car 3 weeks.

    Any ideas

    Re: Failing Wheel bearings

Was the noise exactly the same? If so it would unlikely be the bearings.

Also to get ware on a bearing in 2 weeks I would think would only mean that it is under considerable load outside it's rating or it has been installed incorrectly so that the load is not shared across the bearing as designed.

My 90 series has done nearly 200,000 km on the original bearings, thats since 2001!

Do you have unusual tyre wear?

When Toyota say they have checked everything is square, what did they use to check that? Was it a four corner alignment jig?

Did something unusual happen to your car in the couple of weeks prior to the first noise? Have they checked the diff for water?

The only other thing in the area that could replicate a bearing noise is the brakes...but you would either need no remaining brake pads or a stone jammed in there!

I hope it gets sorted, but if they don't have the equipment then this may also indicate they don't have the know how either. Perhaps if you need to ring around bearing places or other mechanics & just run thru with them the symptoms. You may find someone helpful enough & knowledgeably enough for any future work.

      Re: Failing Wheel bearings

Nothing unusual that i am aware of.

Lots of wet weather and a few water crossings nothing more then 200mm deep which would not even, you would hope not, affect the diff??

I have it home again so I'll let some Diff fluid out and check the consitency, if I get time. If not i'll advise them of this...

Local dealership it is... I was concerned when they said the have had only 1-2 since the 120series come out. And they got vehicles with 500,000km and bearings still good, supposed to be a great bearing from what i've heard.

we'll see how this week goes. Had quite a bit of wet weather up here but haven't been through that much water to be honest.

Ok well pulled the top plug and stuck my little finger in.. couldn't feel any oil. poked in a piece of wire and found it... looks reasonably clean. fairly thin? is it meant to be thin? could be a hint of moisture.. slightly cloudy just.. certainly not milky though.

        Re: Failing Wheel bearings

Toyota just rang.. they are unsure why its chewing them out.

He said that there is a rod that goes to the top of the diff housing which is bent this could be holding it out of alignment.

Anyone know what this rod is or its function?

The above picture is what I can work out is a very similar setup on the rear of a 120 series. Its classed as a live axle 5 link design.

I can't see any connection above the diff unless they are referring to the fifth link crossing from back of the axle on the left & attaching to the body on the right.

Did they say CVs?? This seems strange, Prados have a live rear axle, so NO CVs on the rear, and I find it very hard to believe that the Front CVs could cause the rear wheel bearings!!

No wonder they are having trouble fixing the problem. Got to love using TOYOTA trained mechanics, would have thought the sevice manual would have told them to use the special tool for the rear wheel bearing.

            Good Luck

              Re: Failing Wheel bearings

Thats it.. The short yellow rods with they eyes on each end. they called it panhard rod.. anyhow they replaced the rear right today and the bent panhard rod..

were supposed to do both rears but run out of time.

                Re: Failing Wheel bearings

Ah ha! Was it visibly bent?

With this bent it would pull the whole axle out of whack (shortened rod) which would make the car crab as it drove along and putting excessive & continous side forces on the bearings. Did you say the tyres where scrubing at all?

Also .....do you know how you where able to bend it?

                Cheers

                  Re: Failing Wheel bearings

yes i could physically see it bent.

The tyres get rotated every 10,000 at service so have not noticed any excessive wear on the tyres.

Still no clue as to how I bent it... but it was .......Anyway rod replaced and wheel bearing.. now we just have to wait and see.
