Just wondering if anyone has used the upper and lower contol arms from Machter auto parts.
They seem to be reasonable quality and also reasonably priced.
A bit late in response, and presume you have decided on something but better late than never.
Put Machter LCA’s in to replace my OEM ones 20mths ago.
I have pulled these out this week to replace a LH front bush (due to a workmanship issue by the tyre shop doing an alignment). The other 3 bushes are still ok as far as I can see.
Was going to replace just the bush that has failed, however on closer inspection found the following;
Both Lower control arm rubbers perished – appears to be cracking / aging rather than impact / overstress damage etc. This is probably the main quality issue I have seen, as I have been doing a few water crossings lately, and plan on many more and worry about contamination ingress.
Weld quality is average. Not the worst, but some aspects wouldn’t pass quality tests. Eg Porosity, spatter, undercut. Could be a concern if doing lots of rough terrain, eg corrugations, heavy offroad use.
There is minimal gap left to allow draining on the underside connection between main arm and the pivot bush. This already seems to be partially blocked which may allow corrosion to build in the end arm.
I have abandoned the bush replacement and ordered replacement Superpro arms due to my planned use of the car over the next couple of years, which will involve a lot more offroad and touring, water crossings etc.
If the car was destined for city use, with only the odd dirt driveway, I would consider buying the Machter arms again, given the price.
Hope this helps. I’ll see if I can get some photos and throw them up.
