I have Dobinsons springs ,,,#300 front springs and #327 rear springs ,been on the car almost 3 years now , no sagging at all . Do you have polyair bags in the springs ? They really do help keeping the back up when loaded and still have the nice soft ride when the car is empty,

OK I am the second yes vote  I checked the original measurements posted and the springs have gone from 835mm 1/2 tank with polyairs at 4psi to 830mm under the same circumstances! 70,000 km and plenty of bouncy bouncy (of the 4wd kind). King springs. Happy with that. :P

My rear Lovells sagged badly, as did 2 sets of front Lovells springs. No more Lovells for me.

Interesting comments on the OME struts, i am assuming they r the old OME struts, will be interested to see how the new nitro ones hold up, mine seem a lot stiffer than the old ones i had on my jeep.
No sagging for me but i have only done 10k since lifted and only one big trip to Fraser.

Re: Have your lifted rear springs sagged yet ?

I had medium Kings fitted about 50K ago and on the advice of the suspension retailer, didn't fit air bags at the same time.

Even after advising that I do a bit of towing between a boat and a camper (which would see the cargo area with a moderate to a hell of a lot of gear packed in as well).
Going to Moreton the other day with just the cargo area full (read: nearly bursting at the seams) the rear end sag was heart breaking. Comparing this to the same packing style not long after the suspension was done when it was dead level.

Am now waiting for the tax cheque to allow the installation of Airbags.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, any other suggestions to consider other than Poly-bags? Towing a reasonably heavy 4.8m Stessl or Kimberley Kamper.................sometimes.

                Cheers, Rhet

I think it's either a case of airbags or heavier springs.

If the car is constantly loaded at the rear, go the heavier springs. If its just occasionally loaded, then airbags are the shot.

We put rear airbags in a few weeks ago after enduring tail-down and headlights up every time we filled the cargo area and the result is excellent. Prado rode as well as it ever has and maintained a level ride - no issues with headlight glare etc.

                    Chers Michael

I definitely don't want to go heavier springs, as the rear is not normally loaded enough to justify the harsher ride on the occasions when there would be nothing in it.

I will be putting Air bags in and my question was merely a general enquiry as to whether there were other brands to consider other than Poly-bags, however I will leave the questioning, as don't wish to change the intent of the original thread.

If your rear springs have been consistent and not sagged, list the brand and rating here too..

I am using this info to make a decision on a new rear spring that will be consistent.

                      MAtt,

interesting I havent heard from you on this topic, until here, and I note you think they are showing signs of sagging, do you have any data to qualify this?

It would be the first set I have heard of, that havent had extra weight added to the vehicle, if that is the case.

ARB and Ridepro make thier coils from same material, and to a very similar spec, and problems on that spring are pretty much non existant, but thats not to say it isnt happening.

The only way you will get a better coil than what you have is to either lose some weight, which is causing the sag, or get something like EIbach cold wound coils.

To know for sure, we need to know the loaded height overall of the coil, and its free height.

From my experience, painting coils yellow makes for sagged springs over time, and painting them blue means they can either sag, or snap......

Rhet there are two or three manufacturers that I have seen around. I have only had the Polyair brand before and they have been good. My BIL had the same and he has replaced one side, twice in three years.
He blew a bag on our recent Simpson trip which did cause him (and me ) some grief.

Firestone make bags as well as another brand, the name of which escapes me right now. The other brand is red as well, and the Firestone are blue. They all look the same to me.

                        What's your favourtie colour?
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I prefer the valves on top of the Polyairs, to the Firestone, or coil rites.

                          MAtt,

There are 4 more firmer, taller, coils above the ones you had fited, and what you had fitted would droop 12-14mm per 100kg of weight added.

I know there are separate threads about the polyairs and similar but to add another 2c I have had polyairs in the last three vehicles. All up 390,000km! For me the perfect way to have heavier springs for the month or so of the year I need them. The only problem was the set on the 120 where the hose was long enough to touch the exhaust and burn a hole. These were the first set I didn't fit myself and the hose was a bit too long even though it was in conduit. The hose settled after the first bit of 4wd'ing the car did. A Kmart garden sprinkler joiner later and the hose was fixed temporarily for the rest of the trip. The installer replaced the hose. Not sure about the other brands but the polyairs have my stamp of approval.

Darren, with my steps, is it possible to have a couple of spots welded onto each end of each step to locate a high lift jack, so I can lift the car from those points with no chance if the jack slipping, I think you know what I am after hey ?
