  • Air bags versus progressive springs

Hi, the airbags on my 2003 GXL are not retaining air pressure. I assume that they were installed when the car was reasonably new. A recent trip along the Oodnadatta track towing my camper trailer may have finished them off.

I intend to fit airbag man bags as I did on my 90 series Prado, however fitting new progressive coils may be a superior option. I am not keen to “lift” the suspension.

Airbags inside of the coil spring can be a bit fiddly with maintaining correct air pressure and have only a 5 year guarantee(?). Hopefully the progressive coils would be set and forget.

Does anyone have experience with progressive springs for towing? Are they better than airbags? What type would you recommend?

After investigating progressive coils I figured that airbags were the best option for me as I don’t carry/tow a heavy weight all the time.
I purchased tough dog airbags which have (so far) proven to be superior to the previous two sets of airbag man units I’ve had.

Progressive springs can become spring bound with increased load which can result in a harsher ride than that with a heavier linear spring.
As you have decided quality airbags are imo a better option.
