  • What suspension to get?? Help appreciated

Hi guys, just moved up from my older 90 series to a 2007 120 series prado that is mostly stock standard
I’m based in NZ, use the truck for a heap of hunting, 4x4 access (mainly for hunting) up rivers etc

So the plan is to put a bar and winch on the front
wheels are sorted with 265/70/17 tyres on 0 offset steel rims
Ecu has been chipped for a bit of extra power
    3” exhaust right through

So the question is what suspension do I go for?
I’m looking at the EFS suspension kit
    Or bliesten/dobinson/or king springs

I’ve been reading a lot with the suspension database and just finding it a lot of numbers etc

What kits are you guys running?
what shocks and springs can I run safely that have a nice travel/ride?

Really wanting 50mm lift with as much travel as I can.

can I go for the hilux BE5-D563 shock ?
what spring to go with that?

can I go for the B46-1478LT rear shock? What spring?
many other mods that I need to do to keep things safe?

or is it easier to just go with the standard shorter shocks?

    thanks in advance!!

If you want to keep it simple you can't go wrong with OME setup. Unless you are always heavily loaded don't go for a really heavy rear spring because the ride will be crap when lightly loaded. A mid range spring will be the go. My previous 120 had this set up and it worked fine. Lots of info in the data base especially about what Bilstein NOT to use especially if you have a lift. OME, Tough Dog, TJM etc all have kits but talk to a few suspension places to get totally confused because they all tell you the one they sell is best but if you clearly spell out how heavy you will be and how often they should come up with a suitable Setup. My OME was still fine at 100,000km, much of it heavily heavily loaded on outback roads

Thanks for the reply, usually I’ll be running pretty light.
I don’t do a lot of camping out of the truck, just tow the odd big thing.
Was going to just go raised 100kg constant load rear springs

Have to agree with 404pug. I had fitted a OME 2" lift suspension kit about 2 years ago to our 2004 prado. Mainly to reduce the drop in rear when towing but also for offroad. More than happy with the outcome, it handles better on road and now only drops about 10mm on hitch when caravan hooked up. Another reason was if anything was to go wrong the warranty is covered by any ARB stockist. I went with the 150 to 400kg rear springs.

and your choice of rear spring looks good. You can always add a set of air bags if it is not enough.

Although Ive got 60L fridge, slide drawer ( full of stuff that I may need) and batteries and another fridge in 2nd row. I avoided the constant 400kg option. The ride is great whether towing or not and havent seen any increase in drop with caravan. So far no need for airbags.

Have you tried doing a search on those combos. Look for posts by Whitey . Lots of info in the suspension section.

                  Hi mate.
Go to any reputable dealer and just get a kit.
They will assess weight over the front from accessories etc and match a spring accordingly.
Rear, I’ve always found that 100-300kg load springs do a nice balance with ride at empty and ability to add some weight when needed.
I’ve got dobinson ims, they seem great.
I’ve had dobinson nitro and raw/kings. Never had a problem with either.
A lot of mates have different brands and as long as the brand is reasonable, none of us have had issues.

Considering your desire for a 50mm lift and increased travel, I'd recommend looking into the options you've mentioned: EFS suspension kit, Bilstein, Dobinson, and King Springs. These brands are known for providing quality suspension components. Each has its advantages, so it's worth researching the specific features and reviews of their offerings to align with your preferences and requirements.
Regarding your specific questions about shocks and springs, it's a good idea to check with the manufacturer or a reputable retailer to ensure compatibility with your vehicle and desired lift height. This source of info on the Toyota Hilux Lift kit can offer valuable insights into Dobinson's MRA Adjustable 2-3"" Lift Kit. However, remember that while online forums and sources can provide helpful advice, seeking professional guidance from a trusted mechanic or suspension expert is recommended for a safe and optimal setup.
