  • Front CV's leaking - suspension lift?

    Hi all,

Just had my truck back from a service where I asked them to look at my front CV's as I noticed they were leaking, particularly the outer one on the driver's side. I just thought the stainless steel bands would need replacing but am now told I might need new CV's! ops:

I have seen the thread on this in the 90 series section, but haven't seen many/any 120 series with this issue.

I've got raised King springs with Bilstein struts on the middle circlip, measurements are approx. 795mm front and 830 back. Approx 120000kms done (10000kms with lifted suspension).

I've been told just to stick with genuine parts, but I'm concerned that the same issue is going to appear later on down the track.

Anyone else had similar issues? Opinions? Advice?

Haven't had one go yet, but with my front measuring 817mm I always have a complete spare cv/shaft in the shed. $150 on ebay for the full assembly.

This ride height shouldn't cause CV problems.

Three of the boots on my Prado were leaking around the clips. I took the drive shafts off to change the boots but the joints had water and all sorts of yuk in them. I used http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TOYOTA-LANDCRUIS ... 3363135fae . They came in Repco boxes with 5 year warranty . No problems so far. Repco part ## NSA 995 if you can get them direct from Repco

Exactly my thoughts Leachy, its nothing compared to what some others are running.

I got underneath the truck yesterday to have another look and the angles don't appear to be anything too crazy - there doesn't even appear to be any wearing either like some of the 90 series people have reported. It appears to be leaking from both inner CV's right around near the outer strap for the boot. I reckon getting new straps on should be sufficient.

I'll discuss this with my mechanic, cos the message was passed to me from my wife, so maybe he just said it will need new boots, not entire CV's.

Will report the outcome when I know.

it is normally the outter CVs that wear first.

At the small clamp? weeping/sweating is very common at this clamp. You can actually undo the Toyota clamps and wrap 2-3 layers of quality electrical tape around the boot and put the clamp back on. This will increase the clamping pressure enough to stop any leak. (I did this 25K km ago and no issue since)

Tridon do a CV clamp kit including tool for under $50 if you want to replace the clamp with a new one but it's awkward to do while the drive shaft is on the vehicle.

Re: Front CV's leaking - suspension lift?

Just got back from holiday and forgot to post about this thread.

Spoke to mechanic before leaving and I only need new boots for the CV's - much better than what I thought!

He said re-clamping the boot would just increase the cracking it may have, so new boots seem to be the way to go - gonna happen next service.

                    Hi Guys
Following the install of Bilsteins (circlip at bottom setting)with HD Kings resulting in an 830mm front end, I went underneath tonight for an inspection and found a lot of leakage from the inner CV's, (both sides same) not too mention the angle that they are presently at. (click to enlarge)

I don't think the springs are going to settle down any more, looks like there might be a set of HD Kings on the For Sale thread shortly...
                    Any suggestions?

The grey colour normally means that you have water in the grease which means the cv's will be stuffed. Unless of course they use grey grease nowadays
