  • OME 883 vs: 884. Whats the difference in stiffness?

    Hello.

I have 883 with shims of 10 mm on driver side and 5 mm on passenger side on the strut so i get 10-20 mm higher in front. I have considering change to 884 instead. I know that the 884 spring is a bit longer than 883, but is it stiffer than 883? I know that 883 is calculated for 50 kilo more weight in front, and 884 is for 100 kilo (25 mm in front). I have a 9000 lbs winch only, but that is on a 2" reciever, so when I dont use it, I have it in the lugage room.
Will it be the same stiffness with 884 without the shims like I have today?

I have had experience with both springs. The 883 is definitely a softer coil and provides a more cushioned ride than the 884. Unfortunately in the suspension world, there is no such thing as the perfect set-up for all conditions, invariably you must generally compromise one facet of the ride to enhance another. Your choice will largely depend on what sort of terrain you plan to use your vehicle on, weight carried and driving style/preferences. The 884 is a very popular option with owners here because it seems to provide a pretty good balance of load and performance attributes. Not sure if this thread might be locked because there's plenty of info about OME stuff on this site if you do a search.

Thanks for answer. I have a friend who has 884 spring. He also have TEMS. Maybe it wold work better if he had 883 spring and I had the 884 since I dont have TEMS.. We have been talking about switchin springs.
Do I need to adjust with spacers on the 884 spring to make it same lift on both side, or is this only a "problem" on the 883?
Why lock the thread? I specific ask a question about the difference between 883 and 884.

Re: OME 883 vs: 884. Whats the difference in stiffness?

This thread may get locked because the answers to your question are already in existing threads. If you search, you will find a thread that contains all the spring rates, lengths, shock lengths etc for OME. Always best to do a thorough search before starting a new thread. As for different sized spacers in each side i dont think this is nescessary at all, the difference in measurements you are finding is probably due to alighnment of wheel flares rather than suspension geometry.

Given that Pradopoint was started in the middle of the 120 series production, and the model ceased production over a year ago, it is a safe bet that almost any info you want re common things on the 120 series, ie. suspension, tyres, bullbars, dual batteries and so on, has been posted somewhere already. It may take a while to find it but it is almost certainly there.

        Cheers Andrew

I just dont understand why this thread should be locked. Some forumusers simply dont like if someone newbies like me posts subjects that "allready exists". Now, just to be shure, I checked all 5 pages about this subject. But if this is a problem, you might repport it
My question was: are the difference between the 883 and 884 just a bit longer spring or is the 884 more stiffer than the 883?

Any good installer should be able to provide quality advice on your particular suspension requirements. As indicated before, every set-up arrangement is a compromise (primary versus secondary usage requirements) based on your own needs.

883, 884, and 885 are exactly the same spring rate.

only the free height of the coil is different.

Thank you very mouch for answer. Then it seems to me that I have the same effect as 884 using 883 and shims under the spring cup (have 10 mm on driver side and 5 mm on passenger side) if I understood correctly..

Ah yes quite right, my mistake. Thanks for clearing that up. Must have been 882's as they were definitely softer when I ran them in another Toyo vehicle.
I'm guessing if you shim the 883's you might obtain a similar ride height as the 884, but whether this will equate into similar coil performance is another issue. It's my understanding that different length springs behave differently due to binding, reaction time, length of travel etc. Suspension can be a highly technical field.

As the free length increases, the preload increases at the same install length.
