    BFG 285/70R17

    I live in a country where spacers are not illegal. Offroad, I use my machine exclusively in desert terrain including everything from soft sand to rock.
    I plan to mount BFG 285/70R17 tires by using 1 inch (25.4mm) spacers and a 2" lift kit. Has anyone done a similar conversion and were there any rubbing issues?

    For the most part spacers have not been used in our mods, due to them being illegal in Australia!
    Cetainly, 1" spacers is a fair increase, have you considered different rims with a different offset to the original toyota spec?

      Actually I have thought about rims with a greater offset and maybe ultimately that is the way I'll go but for the short term I plan to go with the spacers. I have some concerns about the spacers being strong enough to withstand the torque and I think I'll keep the back door mounted 265/65R17 spare in case one of these spacers pack up on me. I've already bought the tires and had the spacers made, just waiting for the lift kit to arrive (from Oz of course).
      I doubt I could find such rims in stock in Egypt so I think to get the rims you mentioned I would have to order them and that sometimes takes a lot of time here. By the time they arrive it'll be too hot to go to the desert!
      Still I think your suggestion is a good one.

        i think if you are using the same wheel spacers like the ones they use in USA (spidertrax) its going to be ok coz they can handle the abuse of off roading..can you show us some photos or videos of you 4 wheelin over there!!

          I don't think I have any photos as action packed and KOOL as Matty and Loz above, but I'll see what I can come up with. Most of our photos are on my wife's computer so I'll have to wait 'til I get home and see what we have. Thanks for your comments, my spacers are not spidertrax, they are locally made in Egypt at a machine shop. They look reasonably well made but then there are things I don't know like the metal strength etc. We'll see if I can wring one or two off!

            What's the material? Any heat treatment and stress relieving? Any stress concentration factors in the shape of the spacer? is 1" going to be enough to clear the existing studs and provide enough 'meat' and strength on the counterbore step to carry the load?

              i guess it is hard to find answers like this in most of our local machining shops, either they will use the material they have in hand, or buy it for you from the steel suppliers, and specs like this hard to be bought in small quantities, but i do like to pay extra for the material ,also worth mentioning that they (i mean the machining shops) are good, i use them all the time , and had a lot of custom made item for my jeep (roof rack, rear bumper with tyre carrier, chassis stiffners,etc ...)

              nice to find another PP here in Egypt.

                I think Hisham said it very well with respect to the material. As for stress risers, not really from the shape of the spacers but the new studs were pressed into the spacers and then tack welded in place. I know that this almost certainly makes stress relieving necessary but I don't believe this was done so there's a good chance one of these spacers could crack. I'm still waiting for my lift kit so maybe I could get these spacers stress relieved.
                As for "is there enough meat", I guess that would depend a lot on what the material strength is and this I don't know. I didn't measure the thickness of the material where the stud holes are counter-sunk but I could do that and assume some low material strengths like 50ksi and determine to some degree how much abuse the spacers could take but then I'm not sure how much torque my car could apply and when you factor in things like full throttle climbing through sand and rock, there would be shock loading that would be pretty difficult to calculate (for me that is).
