  • Larger Tyres/Warranty Aug Update

    Hi All,

    I have ordered my new GXL Prado and it should be the new updated model being built from August. I have read with interest the comments on going from 265/65 to 265/70 regarding speedo inaccuracies and possible warranty issues and had decided to remain with the standard tyre until warranty had expired until........

    I noticed that the new spec for the VX and Grande have tyres 275/65/17 (another Toyota odd ball size). This tyre gives an outside diameter of 790mm which is 14mm larger than the standard 265/65.

    Now I am again undecided on going to 265/70 from new, which have an outside diamater of 804mm. I would love to trade in the Grandcraps for a decent set of All Terrains.

    Sorry I was referring to the spec sheet Robn has sent to other members. The new VX and Grande are suppose to get High Gloss Alloys and 275/65 R17 from the August build date.

        Spoke with insurance company today (GIO) about fitting Copper ST 265/70/17 in the veiw to my up coming tour and they refused to cover me because the tyres were more than 15mm over sized. So IT looks like a set of 694 for me.

          Welcome Yoyo.

          If you don't mind changing insurance companies, Suncorp have previously insured my vehicle with 265/70/17's noted on the policy or go to TCIS, who I am now with, as they have no exclusions for modifications.

          Come to think of it, aren't GIO and Suncorp one in the same???

            If you go the 694's go the 275/65/r17
            They are only 14mm larger than the 265/65/r17. They fit on the 7.5 rim and they have white lettering :lol: :lol:

              I'm not sure you'd get the hard spare wheel cover on if you went that wide.

                  under the national ADR rules now 4WD can legally fit 50mm oversize tyres. I don't understand why you would not be covered if you are still complying with ADR's. I think your insurance company may not have caught up with the change in rules. The link to the .PDF is in one of the other threads here, I will see if I can find it and put the link here.

                    It's got nothing to do with the insurance company, but more to do with Queensland Transport.

                    Before you reply to my comment, please ring QT and they will clear up your confusion.

                    Btw that change of rules does not apply in queensland. This has been discussed on numerous forums.

                      My tyre dealer rang me today and told me about the 50mm ADR ruling. So I rang GIO with the news and there reponse was that the ADR ruling was only for ligt trucks and my Prado was not classed as a light truck. I tried to ring VIC roads to get there view but got fed up after 20 mins of waiting and will go down there on monday.

                      Thanks for everybodys input, I will let you know how I go.

                        That's the beauty of forums like this, you can draw on other members knowledge.

                        It seems that SA is also in the boat of restricting increases of overall diameter to 15mm.

                        If the Spec sheet on the August Update model is accurate then it shouldn't be a problem going to 265/70 R17 given the VX and Grande are going to a 275/65 tyre. The 265/70 is only 14mm larger. (I am assuming that the larger tyre would be on the tyre placard).

                        I don't know what Toyota would think though going to a different profile. I do have a mate that changed tyres through the dealer, they wouldn't let him go to 265/70 but would let him go narrower to 245/70 and maintain overall diameter.

                        Anyway thanks for the info

                          Bomber, you will find that even though the 245/70 is narrower the actual footprint of the 245/70(most are light truck very square shoulder) is about as wide as the highway terrain 265/65 because the highway terrain has a much rounder shoulder, i have been looking at coopers and Mickey t's up here in QLD and all of the dealers have said much the same, go for the 245/70/17 and maintain the rolling diameter, just be careful though with the speed rating.

                            Best to stay within your states guidelines re-diameter

                            BUT NO MATTER WHAT THE SIZE, THE LOAD RATING MUST BE THE SAME OR GREATER.

                              It's interesting to note the change of tyre spec on the newer models is a different rolling diameter. This now means it is legal in NSW to go to a 265/70R17 as they are exactly 15mm larger than the largest fitted tyre on that vehicle.

                              The only concern I have with the tyre that is 27mm larger than mine is it's effect on my gearing.

                              Anyone else running 245/70R17s? I might make a separate post and ask.
