  • Thoughts on 245/70/17

On the search for a new set of tyres to replace the stock 265/65/17. However, it seems a little hard to source 265/65 or 275/65 size tyres at the moment.

One dealer suggested I try 245/70/17 to open up a greater range of tyres as they could then offer Cooper ST and STT.
I'm just not convinced going to thinner tyres is the way to go since I was looking an aggressive AT or possible Muddies to improve traction.

It is legal with just a 2mm decrease in diameter (trying to avoid 265/70 as im in QLD....when will they go to the national code of practice?!)

    Any opinions/thoughts much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Sam

The standard dunlop 265/65 has a very rounded edge vs the the st for example is quite square, if measured across the tyre just the contact surface you woukd find their is bugger all difference.

Might look at fitting the 265/70s if the rules are suppost to be changing soon anyway (although they have been saying that for a while now). Prefer to stick with the std width and take advantage of the small increase in clearance.
Maxxis Bighorns are probably the way I will go mainly due to good performance offroad, they may be a little noisy from reports but there a hell of a lot cheaper than BFG KM2s.

Actually saw another Prado getting around Cairns today with 245/70s and they didn't look too bad. I thought they would look a little like butter cutters for the vehicle size but I was wrong.
