  • My monster truck is $300 BFG shredder.

    Just after some sympathy actually.

I bought this car from Melbourne and my friend drove it out, we met up in Adelaide & took the scenic route... everything fine through to Oodnadatta, Painted Desert.

2 minutes on the Mulga Park Rd and "Hey, what's that noise?" "Don't worry, keep going" said wise me. Fortunately Christoph stopped and there was a bloody giant rear-axle U-bolt half into one of my brand new BFGs. Ouch. One spare left. Around Umuwa, got out to take a photo, ssssssssssss said the tyre (same location LR again). A spanner this time! Only about 500kms to go and no spares. No kit because I'm waiting for my tyrepliers to come in from my work connection (can't possibly do both spares on that trip ay).

Anyway, we got in safely and I've done some way dodgie patch jobs, but they're holding air so they're so much better than nothing. Work car tyrepliers coming with for now.

Sounds more like bad luck and you ran over some debris than the prado shredded tyres.

No, seriously, the rims have teeth.

Gordo, did you have a repair kit on board or did you use some other method? Just interested for my own edification. (Christ I can blurt some silly big words out!)

Well, we weren't carrying any repair kit at all initially, thinking that it was inconceivable to do two tyres just on the dirt highway (I live on these roads and it's extremely unusual for me to do tyres just driving around the road, although the work car does have XZYs.)

At Amata we bought a pair of levers and a tyre string kit but thankfully didn't have to use any of it. I used my tyrepliers & levers when I got home, an angle grinder to remove the waxy skin then a mushroom patch and a big bead patch over the top.. luck and a prayer will get these wheels there... Certainly one of them goes in the bin ASAP.

NB the BFGs are so soft it was a jiffy to rip them off & put'em back on.
