  • 16's on 120

Purchased Some Kelly TSR tyres running on 16inch rims for the 120, been on for about 3 weeks now handle very different to A/T tyres i had on and in 17inch profile, not too noisy at speed thankfully.

    is yours a GXL?
If so, how did you make the 16" rims fit?
2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,
rallye 2000 spots, roof mount dvd, dig_options stereo, toyota roof bars.
    More to come!

went to the local tyrepower, guys were great he thought the steel rims he had would fit. They did on the rear but no go on the front, wasn't rapt with the black rims anyways but i'd remembered reading somewhere that the 90 series steel gxl rims clear the brakes.
Went down to toyota and got some, had tyres fitted and all clear now just waiting on on 2 more to come from Japan. They are fitted to a gx so the new rims sit about 40mm outside wheel arch. And no grinding....

          16's on the 120

Gday fellow Prado owners. I'm new to this forum. I've just become the proud owner of a 2004 GXL 3lt diesel, upgrading from a 90 series GXL 3.4 petrol. I'd really like to keep the 16" steelies from the 90 for the 120 but it's tight with the brakes and not game to test drive it. How did your's fit, travis.luke, when mine don't? The reason i want to keep the 16's is more choice with upgrades of tyre sizes plus, prefer steel for the 4wding i want to. Can anyone please shed some light on this?

              Hey Fitman,
yeah not sure why your steel wheels are not fitting, is it the caliper hitting or the disc guard???. I've had mine on for a bit now and done some good tracks last weekend with no hassles. I havent had to file, grind or adjust anything, and yes clearance isn't massive but their still turning.
I can't give you a definitive answer why they are not clearing, only thing is they sit much prouder than the 120 gxl alloys i had so i've had to put flares on also the better half copped some mud through the window whilst out playing THAT didn't go down well.
As with what Samo said this may void your insurance so you do it with this in mind.

Thanks guys. Yes, the caliper is touching the rim. No free play at all. Will just stay with the 17's i reckon and eventually replace the tyres with bigger ones to enhance the spring & shocker upgrade.
