  • MT STZ Vs MT ATZ 5 Rib

    Hi All,

I am looking at upgrading my shoes from the STD 265/65/R17 Grandcraps to a Mickey Thompson Tyre, however I am unsure of which to get.

Both of the STZ and ATZ 5 Rib are a 80/20 tyres.
The STZ is a STD Size Tyre and the ATZ is a 265/70/R17.

As most of my driving is Highway / City, with occasion off road with my Tvan, which tyre should I really look at?

I am looking at getting OME's done as well.

Is there any difference in the expected kms between the 2 tyres?

    Comments Appreciated

I've got the STZ tyres. 265/65R17. They are still very quiet on highway, and pretty good off road too. They've now done 10,000km (including a trip to Cape York, and recently Fraser Is),and have hardly worn at all (at most 2mm worn off the 12mm original tread depth).

I deliberately bought the standard size since this means I have the same gear ratios as standard, because my 6-speed manual gears are quite high enough without making them even higher!

I used to have the 5 rib ATZ and found the gearing was fine, however they were on the car when I bought it so I had nothing to compare it to at the time. I have since replaced them with another brand in a 275/65/17 which is a lot closer in overall height to the standard and haven't really noticed any difference in the gearing, economy etc.
The main reason I didn't go for 265/70/17 was the increase in overall height being more than legally allowed and possible implications in the event of an accident (may give an insurance company an excuse to not pay out). If you do a search you will find plenty on this topic.
Having said that, overall I was very happy with my old MT's, not too much road noise until they got quite worn and good off road performance.

        G'day Stuart,

I have the ATZ 5 Rib in 265/70 (LT) and am happy with them. Actually I'm also running OME too...

Seem to be fairly quiet on the blacktop, great on sand, and like all AT's - terrible in the mud.
Havent seen the STZ in action however I'd expect they'd be a good allrounder also.

30,000kms down and at least 50% tread left means I will have these a while too!

        Good Luck mate.
        Cheers
        Micheal.

FYI ATZ 5 ribs are due to be removed from the MT range very soon. The STZ will be replacing it in more sizes (including 265/70/17.
