  • NSW Legal Issues with 265/70/17

I think i read somewhere that it is only in QLD that these arernt legal. I am about to get 265/70/17 BFG AT's fitted and thought i must just double check if anyone knows for sure what the law is in relation to this size.
    Cheers
    Phil

    HI Phil

I cant answer your real question but I fitted 70series on my 1kz and it definitely slowed its progress a bit. The dtronic bought it back to normal though

In SA - you can only go 15mm larger than standard. So 265/70 are too big, legally, as they are closer to 20mm larger. I think this is the case in several states.

Thanks guys, i ended up calling the tyre place and changed to 275/65/17, (only 6mm bigger OD)which they had in stock Tassie, i thought that might be the case and was concerned about that as i already carry around a couple hundred kilos' worth of crap. The interior of my car sounds very similar to yours with kids seats and crumbs all over the place. Still saving up for a chip and exhaust before i go bigger tyres.
        Cheers

The 275/65s are what I have in BFG AT. They are actually a little over 13mm larger in overall diameter. So just under legal. The 6mm is one side wall only, not overall rolling diameter or whatever they call it. However, this is what the law book go by.

In WA it's 15mm for passanger cars and 50mm for commecrial/light truck hence as far as i know 265/70 are legal here and thats what i've put on last week. She seats nice and high now and D4d no problems acceleration wise

Yes iantz, you are right I was only considering one side of the tyre. Anyhow they are on the car now. I went for a little drive on some loose dusty rds last night and they feel great, very positive grip. No real road noise either so far very happy. Will report more after more testing. As with everyone I'm comparing brand new tyres against old clapped out ones so the difference is very noticeable. I drive around with a couple hundred kilos of crap in the back and haven't noticed the car being sluggish with the slightly bigger size.

Pjorek, you might find a prado is considered a passenger vehicle. ( check what it says on your rego papers) just cause we all like to run LT tyres doesn't make it a light truck or commercial vehicle. Just my 2 bobs worth....

Just a bit of a comparison from a tyre calculator, the other problem is not all tyres are made the same and some will measure taller when new. It unfortunately does not mean much because most transport agencies will go of what's stamped on the side of a tyre even when there is solid evidence to show some tyres are smaller than others new from the factory.

                  265/65 R 17 -
                  Rolling Radius: 243.88 cm
                  Total Diameter: 77.63 cm
                  Sidewall Height: 17.23 cm

                  265/70 R17
                  Rolling Radius: 252.21 cm
                  Total Diameter: 80.28 cm
                  Sidewall Height: 18.55 cm

Based on a tyre calculator over all height increase in the tyre could be up to 3cm or 30mm when comparing the over all height of the two tyres, but you would half that in terms of lift your 4WD gains so your only lifting your 4WD 15mm, not 30mm. A tyre change in this comparison would mean when your travelling at 100km/h your going about 104km/h
