  • 275 70 17 bfg's - causes steering problem on front guard?

    Hi All,

I have ordered a set of 275 70 17s for the 120 series - I have read a few posts that this causes rubbing on full lock. I am booked in this week for the fit out - IS THIS A PROBLEM? Should I run with the 265's

    Hi Damien,

It depends on the rims your using. If its the standard gxl alloy then yes it will rub on full lock, a bit of panel work can be done but i found you will still get contact on lock and compression.

The above is also assuming you have an aftermarket lift as well. I think at standard height you would have even more issues.

A change of rim with less offset eliminates the problem.

personally if you are staying with factory wheels i would stick to the 265'

    Cheers,

    Peter

      Thanks Peter,

Standard wheels and height - thinking i'm biting off a little too much with the 275's. Will ring them tomorrow - 265's to keep things easy I think. Thanks again.

yeah ive got 265 70s and it just comes a poofteenth of a milimeter off the the upper control arm when at full lock...im sure if im going over a bump at full lock it touches. i would stay away from 275s

And here I was thinking I was the only one to use this unit of measurement.

Anyone have any ideas who I would write to so that I can get this recognised as a national standard?

            bahahaha!

btw I reckon those springs i bought off you definately helped, otherwise it'd be rubbing for sure. Either way i don't think it's a lot and does not cause enough damage to worry about

You can safely fit 275/65/17 or 265/70/17 but you can't have the width and height together in a 275/70/17 on the standard alloy.
I like the "poofteenth of a millimeter" as a standard, but I also use "bees dick" or "gnats nut" as measurements of very small units.

Peter are they African bees or European bees?

African bees dicks and European bees dicks are not the same standard at all. the difference is like the difference between metric and imperial measurements, therefore one African bees dick equals 2.54 European bees dicks.

I run 275/65 BFG. They are very close to rubbing on full lock. I put these on with the standard height first, and while it didn't rub, the lift certainly gives more room for them.

                      Interesting.

I measured up a set of 275/70/17 Mickey STZ's the other day, they are actually less width than my 265/70-17 MTZ's (Due to the MTZ's aggressive sidebiters) and only 8mm larger in diameter (4mm a side.)
I cant see that they will rub any worse on the sway bar on full lock than the MTZ's do now?

My MTZ's have never got near any panels or guards? More info guys?

I am planning on going to the 275/70 STZ for a road tyre soon.

I think your right Brook. I rolled out an stz today and it was even skinnier than the 265/70 fc2 and not a lot higher. 805 - 810 for mtz. Last time i tried with standard rims was a BFG 275/70 and it hit the arms inside but I agree the Stz should fit ok.

For interest Im fitting up a set of 305/65/17 Atz 4 ribs tomorrow, Darren at Total traction tyres dropped one on my rims last week and claims it fits so we will see once they start rolling.

Might have a set of 4 265/70 mc2s for sale soon.
