  • Changing the tyres / tyre sizes with a leased vehicle (novated lease)

Hey all, I picked up a 120 series a few months ago and I'm in the process of kitting it out.

I'm currently in the market for some new tyres and am looking at either the BFG A/T, Cooper S/T maxx or even BFG muddies. Or something else (still un decided). Maybe even the Pirelli scorpions as they won the A/T tyre comparison in the 4WD action review recently.

The vehicle is on a novated lease and is leased through Leaseplan.

So my question is this. Leaseplan say they need to approve the tyre purchase, and the tyres must be the same size, load capacity, speed rating etc. as the factory tyres. So can I get any of the tyres mentioned above?? I know the stock size is 265/65 R17, but what will they approve eg 270/65 R17 etc etc

Does anyone have any experience with this?? Not sure if it's an issue or not.

I will be calling them to find out but I want to decide on the tyre first.

Also does anyone have the Pirelli Scorpions and how do they go? All I seem to hear about on the forum here are BFG and coopers, haven't heard much on the pirelli's.

    Cheers

    Phil

The guys at the tyre shop know how to get around these things.
The lease company will approve a value, then see what the tyre guys can supply for that value.
When I got my BFG's, on my leased Prado, I paid $20.00 per tyre over and above the lease company cost, they did not complain about what went on....

I have had the PIRELLI SCORPION ATR's ON FOR 40k now and have found them brilliant on the road and sand and they seem reasonable in the rough stuff. Haven't tried them in a lot of mud though........... They are also showing minimal signs of wear or damage!

so I assume by dollar value you are referring to the total allocation (eg. they have allocated $2000 over the life of the lease) and as long as you are less than this you should be OK?

4WD action magazine gave these a 7/10 in the mud so would be interested to see how they go.

Piggy - no good only lasting 50K. what are you running now? I'm after a tyre that will perform relatively well in the mud but also goes ok on the tarmac. I think I may be asking the impossible!!

My 120 is a novated lease and I just made sure to stick with legal sizing so insurance and roadworthyness was ok. I went 275/65 17 with BFG A/Ts. On my second set now but only because I changed the first at 35,000km to keep the half worn tyres as spares and trailer use. My lease company was fine with what I fitted and I didn't have to cough up any extra $. That depends on your lease and how much 'float' is in the account I suspect. Give them a call is your best option.

You won't get BFG MUDs in 265/65/17.

My original lease was fully paid for by the company, so maybe they set the limit, I'm not sure. Now, I have just signed up for another 3 years on my 120. Including another set of tyres, considering I've had the BFG A/Ts on for almost 50k, they still look like about 85% or more left...

BFG M/T's would be noisy, I'd reckon.

                        265/70/17 is too large.

                        I've used BFG M/T's, they're great, but a bit noisy, I love the A/T's.

Got the 5 x BFG A/T's no worries. Tyrepower did all the work I just dropped it in and picked it up. Leaseplan get a pretty decent discount so it was only $304 per tyre, that's fitted, aligned, balanced etc.
