  • Tall skinny tyres on the 17 inch prado wheels

    Ok people I'm having a 2 inch lift kit fitted in the new year and just wanted to know what size tyres to run. I want taller tyres not wider tyres coz I want to keep the original 17 mag wheel that are on the car from factory

    Lots go up in profile from a 65 to a 70 series.

    What model do you have. The taller tyre knocks the performance of the older 1kz a bit.

      Really the best tyres would be the standard size tyres as anything taller would affect your speedo and gearing. (I understand that going for taller tyres should get you better fuel efficency at cruise and a bigger footprint but it will also make it a little bit doughy down low)

            V6 with oodles of power then go with a 265/70/17. Common size. No big issues with the law in most states.

            If you mean HOW do tyre sizes work then this is how;

            The first number is the width of the tyre. so 265mm wide.

            The middle number is how thick the tyre is from the rim to outside of the tread worked as a percentage of the width.

            So a 265/70 means the 70 is the ratio. So the tyre wall is 70% of 265mm.

            The third number is the rim size.

            Factory standard is 265/65/17 so going to a 265/70/17 will raise the height by 5% of the width of the tyre.

                Mate the biggest benefit of going to 70 series over the 65 is choice. Heaps more options to choose from. Not sure where you're from but in Queensland at least it is (techniquely) illegal to go with most 70 series tyres. Like Tassie said this number relates to the ratio of the width, so a 265/ 70 tyre's OD will be larger than a 245/ 70. This outside diameter is what needs to be considered when staying within the law. Having said all this there are litterally hundres of Prado's driving around on 265/ 70 17 without any dramas from police and even some with consent from Insurer's
                As for a 50/50 tyre, probably the most popular would be Cooper S/T Maxx, Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib and the BFG All Terrains. All with their merits and plenty of people claiming each is the best. Good luck!
