  • any new info on tyre sizes

    Gday Guys
Ive done a search but havent found any info in the last month or two about new tyre sizes and warranty claims. Is the new GXL still fitted with 265/65? Im waiting to pick up my auto gxl and was going to put the 265/70/r17 BFG AT on however after having a good read seems like its a no no if i ever have an accident i wont be covered.

Any recent comments on the legalities of fitting 265/70.

    Have a good one

    ps I live in WA

Have read of the of the document below.
      "NATIONAL CODE OF PRACTICE
      for
      LIGHT VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION
      and
      MODIFICATION"

      It states on page 17

The rolling diameter of any tyre fitted to an off-road passenger vehicle or a commercial vehicle must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.

So ... according to my tyre size calculator  ...

        265/65/17 has a diameter of 776 mm

        265/70/17 has a diameter of 802 mm

which obviously varies a little depending on the brand of tyre but is well within the 50 mm upper limit .. which makes them legal ... or have I missed something ??

aha ... then I just read in another post that the upper limit for the Qld RTA is 15 mm ... which means your 265/70's are then illegal.

Interesting ... wonder which states allow what sizes ??

        Cheers
        Chippy

The search button will bring a few threads up from about 6 months ago where it was discussed in depth.

Saves having a dozen more threads to confuse the next poor bugger trying to find info on it.

Qld government is still to change the law to the national acceptance of 50 mm over. Maybe next year eh?
However in saying that I do not know what WA law says.

Surely a NATIONAL design rule or code of practice will overide a state one?

Definitely go on 265/70. They are just perfect for stock GXL. 8)

I would be very surprised if you had any dramas legally with 265/70s it is no greater than the Hiluxes, Navaras, Couriers etc running 31s I have never heard an insurance company or DOT ever bother anyone on 31s in these vehicles and its pretty close to the exact same difference over standard.

Yes you can make it legal, you need to get an engineering certificate. This makes the car road worthy & as such insurable.

Its a bit of stuffy around but I wanted BFG MT's on my car & they only make them in the bigger size. If you don't want the advantages/disadvanatages of going to a bigger tyre then no I wouldn't bother.

                    Cheers
