Could be the UCA.. I think a quick check could be to pull up along side the kerb, turn hard left lock and drive the tyre just up onto the crest of the gutter. Now hop out and have a look behind the inside leading edge of the tyre and see how close (or touching) it is. Driving onto the gutter is just to give you a bit of articulation on the front wheel...

I tried.....285/70 hitting big time. Simply they are too big. You could change the offset but this will just change where they rub. I know there are some ppl with 33's.
In the end I didn't even bother trying 275..... Because its only gonna give 6mm more clearance than a 265/70-17 so i went with what I knew fitted!
      Bigger tyres = less power
With 265/70 speedo is accurate, with anything bigger vehicle is unroadworthy due to speedo under reading which is not allowed.
      Simple decision really.
      Hope that helps.
      .
I have both 265 x 70 x BFG AT KO, had them on for a few years with a 50mm Iron Man lift.

      They don't rub any where.

I also have a set of 265 x 70 x R17 Mastercraft Courser MT, (Coopers) they are also fine.

As said before, I think going for any thing bigger is going to cause you a headache.

edit, these are all on the standard 17 inch 7,5 alloys.

Has anyone fit their spare wheel cover over 265 x 70 x 17's? I thought that it would still fit over an all terrain so long as it wasn't too aggressive, but the tyre shop I'm going through says that no 265 x 70 x 17 will fit over the cover. Can anyone confirm if they have fit the cover over theirs and what type of tyre it it?

You will also need to space out the spare wheel carrier. AMTS is the man to see for spacers.

Out of curiosity, and sorry if this is wandering off topic a little, but to all those that have said their speedo is now more accurate with the bigger tyres, how is your odometer? Generally speaking if the speedo was reading high, but is now accurate, does that mean that your odometer that was (should have been) accurate is now reading low? (ie for 100km travelled odo only shows 95km?)
Wish List: Late 120 series or 150 series V6 preferably manual, the funds to buy said vehicle

Current ride: MY2002 Mits. Pajero V6 manual With a couple of bits and pieces

I have a 2004 GX Prado with alloy rims. I have only owned the car for 12 months and it is time for new tyres.
The current rims have an unusual size tyre of 235 70 17 which the local tyre mob say that is all I can put on.
To me it seems a little suspect considering the only tyre in the country which stock that size is the Cooper AT3.

So can I stick bigger rubber on my rims which would give me a bigger scope of tyres to buy?

                      Thoughts?

The original rims on a GX 2004 are 17X6 steel wheels and about the biggest you could go on these would be 235's. They come standard with 225's. It's a bit hard to provide you with sound advice because if the rims are alloy then it's hard to know what size they are and therefore what tyres will fit. However, that's not the only issue with a GX. I've got the same model and with the Prados without flared guards (if you go with a bigger rim, like GXL steel wheels that are 17X7.5) there is always the issue of how far will the tyre stick out beyond the guards. So you can fit a bigger tyre like a 265X17 on a wider rim, but it will stick out beyond the side of the car which may have roadworthy implications for you. If you trawl the posts you will find that some people have done that and think that it's ok. I put the GXL steel rims on and settled for 245X17 Cooper AT3's and have been very happy with those. For a really good build-up of a GX have a look at the Mcgonical thread from last year.

I'm running 285/70/17 bfg km2 MUDs on a +20 17x8 steely and are pefect. Sounds like the same amoun of rub you guys are getting with the 286/70 , just a bit on the plastic splash guard which is nothing 5 mind and a heat gun fixes that

I believe someone has fitted 90 series rims and it cleared the brake calipers.
