  • Tyre pressure - Cooper ATR

I've fitted a set of Cooper ATR 265/65R17s to our Prado. The tyre place that installed them had them inflated to 38 psi. Needless to say the ride was a bit firm like a skateboard!

The tyre placard recommends 28 psi for all driving/load conditions on the 265 tyre, so I dropped them to 32 psi.

What pressure are other ppl running?

I'm going to phone the tyre dealer and see if the tyres actually need to be at such a higher pressure incase I've missed something.

    Cheers all,

    Drew.

    Hi’a Drew.

I was running mine at 38psi on the road, but after a chat with the South Aus Cooper man, he recommended 32psi. I felt this was a bit to low so I am currently running 34psi (cold). The 4psi drop made a difference to the ride in that is softer but I found the vehicle seems to wallow slightly due to the tyres flexing more with the lower pressure.

When I manage to pull my finger out, I plan to try 36psi.

    Paul.

PS. I am running 265/70/17 ATRs.

      Cooper ATR's

I run my Coopers at 42psi for highway driving.
I have found that they will wear on the sides very quickly at lower pressures driving on hilly, winding roads where I live.

I was tossing up a couple of options for new tyres just before I left Brisbane, It was down to the ATR's or that other number that gets mentioned on here quite a bit........................or the silent armour. I am glad I didn't wait for those now!
Anyway, the 10K balance etc is due in a few hundred k's and I have been vary happy with them. The dealer in Brisbane inflated initially to 34psi and when I left Qld for Katherine towing a Jayco Outback, I inflated the rear to 40 and the front to 36. Just shy of 4,000K's later, I couldn't be happier.

i run my ATR's at 38... mainly because i want them to last longer and they get me in and out of where i want to go!

I've just had the 20k rotation done.. but i really don't think they are going to make it to the supposed 60k warranty!

Had my 10K balance, alignment etc done yesterday on the ATR's.

Had it done in darwin and were happy with the job the lads did on it.

There is a bit of discussion on Lcool atm on the blowout issue. I am trying to track down what psi the guy was running when it happened.
Anyone able to help me out?

this is from the LCOOL web site about the last tyre that blew.
The tyres are P. Are the LT a thicker ply?

                        Cooper ATR tyres

Woould recommend the following (on all tyres)
                        Sand - 20 PSI
                        Unsealed roads - 30 PSI
                        Bitumen Road - 40 PSI

Use this as a starting point.

Have had Grandtreks as standard fitment, had 42 PSI on bitumen - very even wear.
Had 20 PSI on Fraser Island - went better than BFG A/T's!
Had a puncture when running 40 PSI on gravel (rocky) track(will not do this again!)
Stuck to the above formula when travelling Central Australia, including Simpson Desert - not one puncture on the five vehicles on the trip.
Now have Cooper ATR's - have done 75000km without a puncture and they still have at least another 10k on them.
I always have 42PSI in them for highway work (note I have OME suspension. Ride is firm, however the tyres do not wear on the outside edges. No probblems in the wet.
Note: advanced driving schools insist on 40 PSI before you can do the course.

                          Thanks Craig

I actually read that message........all except for the bit that says what his PSI was (insert silly looking face here)

                          Cheers anyway, Rhet
