  • Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 Rib or STZ?

Hi just wondering if anyone has tried either or both of these tyres. I want some for mainly highway use and am looking for a tyre that gives good onroad grip and good milage. Any input would be great. How many kms you have got out of them.

I've got STZ IN 265/65-17 standard size for GXL
EXCELLENT IN ALL ASPECTS on and offroad
only done about 5000klms, highly recommended
I'm going to sell those and try the MT ATZ4
in a bigger size a bit more for offroad.
I have tried muddies, not for me for many reasons.

I've got ATZ 5 Rib in 265/70/17 size and done just under 10,000Kms. No problems and no aggressive wear either. When I purchased them I had set of MTZs and the Mickey dealer said if it's more for the highway 5 rib was a better bet than the STZ. I run them on 40 psi and the ride is good and got heaps of grip on the wet too. Only thing is it's bit noisier than I'd like for a A/T.

I would go the STZ's as they are the newer design tyre.

        Good reports from them.

I was going to get them in 275 x70 x 17 however went for the more aggressive 4 rib ATZ's
        Cheers

A mate had the ATZ and ended up doing 120,000km on them. Admittedly he was always rotating them but it goes to show how good Mickey T's are I'm getting them put on mine on Wednesday he convinced me!!!!

I have been told that the STZ eill eventually be replacing the ATZ 5 rib.
Having said that I used to have the 5 ribs and was very happy with them, I do mainly highway driving and found they performed well on the bitumen, probably the main reason I didn't get them again is they don't do them in the 265/65.

g'day, what size atz4 did you put on?
you sound just like me now, ive got stz 256/65 30.60''(Love them) and muds 265/70 31.90'' (not impressed)
liking size of 275/70 32.20'' but of the 2 only stz comes in that
i might try to fit 285/70 32.80'' atz4, but will be very close, have to see for myself i think

Ended up paying the equivalent of $360.00 F&B however traded my OEM tyres in straight from the dealer.

                  This was for 265 x 70 x 17.

I would have liked the 285's however may a been a bit close to the upper control arms unless I got new rims with more offset.

                  Cheers

Thats a pretty ok price, its sounds like many ppl pay about $370-380 arb quoted me $405, i only asked them as they were the cheapest last year on a set of bfg km2, told me it was their best price..... next call i made was $355.....gotta be happy with that!

Im going to try the 285, but think it will hit or be too close, easy enuff to fit one and see, then we all know for sure!
how do you find the tyres offroad?

I had 265/70/17 ATZ4's on my 120 and now have STZ 265/65/17 on my 150. Both sets have been great so far, you will notice the ATZ4 have a bit of road noise and they are a heavy tyre, even with the bigger size calculated in i lost 1-1.5L per 100 (petrol) going from Cooper ATR's to them. I fitted my 150 with the STZ/bar/Lift from new so cant compare the STZ's to standard grandcrap running but there must be some loss going from a highway terrain to a Light truck tyre.

I will possibly go 4 ribs in the bigger size next time just because they dont do the STZ in 70 series. I have 35,000 on STZ's and had just over 40,000 on the ATZ4's when i sold the vehicle, you cant go wrong with either tyre IMO.

in Stz you can get 275/70-17 only really a little bigger than a 265/70
                        they are 32.2inches o.d,

For those interested it is Greg at G&S Tyres in Somerville. If your down that way pop in and say g'day he's always willing to have a chat and give advice and while you are down there check out his Jeep it's pretty awesome
